Pooley Bridge boasts stunning views, historic sites and fantastic local amenities and is ideally situated for plenty of outdoor and water based activities or for just simply relaxing and taking in the tranquillity of the lake at Ullswater.. This beautiful village is situated at the northern end of Lake Ullswater, just by the River Eamont. The name Pooley Bridge derives from a large pool in the River Eamont, which gives the name Pooley; then in the 16th century, a bridge was constructed across the river, hence the name Pooley Bridge. Pooley Bridge itself offers wonderful views of the lake and surrounding hillside, as well as some fantastic walks in and around the village. To the north of the River Eamont stands Dunmallard Hill where Iron Age remains can be found. The centre of Pooley Bridge reveals yet more history in the shape of St. Paul's Church, which dates back to around 1868, and is flanked by delightful old stone houses. If you don't want to venture out of the village, Pooley Bridge offers a few shops, 2 tea-rooms and 3 pubs, ideal if you want to take a break from walking or mountain biking.  Mark Anne Vause' dream came true early in 2008 when they moved to take over Elm House Guest House Pooley Bridge, Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. The Lake District made a deep impression on Mark Anne from many childhood holidays in the area. This impression was cemented when Anne's parents and brother took over Granny Dowbekins Tearooms also in Pooley Bridge in year 2000. After deciding to strikeout and make a lifestyle change from Blackburn, Lancs; it took 1 ½ years of searching to eventually find Elm House as being the perfect place to work and bring up their son Joseph. From the very first day of moving in Mark Anne started to put their plans and ideas for Elm House in to place and by Easter they opened two brand new en-suite bedrooms both with solid oak furniture, beautiful decor and modern bathrooms. Mark and Anne will continue to provide excellent accommodation with food of the highest standard and aim to enjoy and live in Pooley Bridge for many years to come, they welcome and invite customers old and new to come along and experience this beautiful location in their warm and friendly home.

The magic of Ullswater hits you the moment you see it, the glistening clear water surrounded by majestic, magnificent mountains and wonderful, wooded fells. Ullswater Lake is a breathtaking site to behold. It's easy to understand why Ullswater Lake is regarded by many as the most beautiful lake in the British Isles. It is the second largest lake in the Lake District. Seven and a half miles long and averaging three quarters of a mile wide, it is a typical ribbon lake'. formed in the last Ice Age when a glacier scooped out the valley floor. The origin of the name Ullswater' is not known for certain, however, it is said to come from the name of a Nordic chief Ulf' who ruled the area in Viking times. Ullswater Lake is shrouded in history; William Wordsworth was inspired to write his famous poem Daffodils' after seeing daffodils growing on the shores of Ullswater, a fitting testament to the beauty of the area. Ullswater Lake boasts many attractions, including the Ullswater Steamers that offer trips around the Lake, calling at Pooley Bridge, Glenridding and Howtown; other boating activities; fishing and the lake side walk from Pooley Bridge to Glennridding regarded as the best low level walk in the Lake Distric National Park. The steamers operate all year round so whenever you want to visit there is always something to do. Ullswater is also popular with sailors and it's not unusual to see the lake dotted with yachts bobbing up and down in the water. A visit to Ullswater provides something for all, dramatic mountains to challenge adventurous walkers, as well as peaceful strolls through the tranquil unspoilt valleys for those wanting a more relaxing break.
