CUMBRIA OFFERS a wide range of leisure pursuits for visitors of all ages and interests. Walking and cycling, outdoor activity
centres, open farms and watersports will appeal to families, whilst more leisurely pastimes include investigating the rich history of the area through the many castles, historic homes and museums or visiting open
gardens and plant nurseries. Wherever you go and whatever you do you will be surrounded by some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in England. In Eden District there are half a million acres of some of the most breathtaking landscapes in England. Kirkby Stephen is a market town, lying at the head of the beautiful Eden Valley. This historic town is easily accessible from the east-west A66 cross Pennine route, once used by the Romans, Danes and Saxons, and from the north-south by the M6. On the southern edge of the town is an ancient earthwork called Croglam Castle and, in nearby Mallerstang, is Pendragon Castle, long associated with Arthurian mythology. There is mystery too in the Nine Standards, ancient cairns standing on the fell above the town. Kirkby Stephen was granted its market charter in 1361 and continues to hold a lively market every Monday. The town has a good selection of
shops and local services, including a tourist information
centre and many fascinating antique and curio
shops. The town itself has some interesting historic buildings, including the Cloisters in the Market Square and the parish church, known as The Cathedral of the Dales. The church houses an ancient relic, the Loki stone, one of only two in Europe to represent the Norse God Loki. The River Eden is just two minutes from the Market Square so a riverside stroll is an easy option with spectacular rock formations to be seen at Stenkrith Park. The historic Settle-Carlisle railway line serves the town, and provides travellers with one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the country. For walkers there are many interesting routes for all ages and the famous Coast to Coast walk passes through Kirkby Stephen. The town is an ideal base for touring the beautiful Eden Valley, the nearby North Lakes, North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales
The Kings Arms Hotel is an attractive 17th century former Posting Inn, situated in the small market town of Kirkby Stephen, in the upper Eden Valley. It is in an area of natural
beauty, lying mid-way between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and yet is only a few minutes drive from the M6. The hotel retains its ancient charm and many fascinating historical features such as a powder
closet, pictured right, where gentlemen used to powder their wigs! This 300-year-old hotel has been carefully modernised to retain its character and prides itself on its personal attention to every requirement. All the
rooms are tastefully appointed with antique
furniture giving a tranquil elegance to the hotel, while retaining all the comforts of modern living. The hotel has a spacious residents'
lounge, pictured to the left, with a wide range of books to browse through and colour
television too. Kirkby Stephen and its surrounding countryside offer the visitor many opportunities for enjoying a country break and the Kings Arms Hotel is the perfect place to stay, with warm hospitality, good food and comfortable surroundings.
