At a Subsequent sale in 1791, the house was sold for £350 and included the right to sit in Pew 37 in Brampton Church and peat extraction rights on the Common! Location and Activities. Oval House is situated in the attractive old market town of Brampton (right) in north east Cumbria, close to the World Heritage Site of Hadrians Wall, the scenic Lake District and in an area of outstanding natural beauty. For visitors interested in history, Brampton is the town in which Bonnie Prince Charlie,'The Young Pretender', stayed when he took the 'keys' of Carlisle after the siege and where many of his supporters were executed after his rebellion collapsed. At nearby Naworth the Earls of Carlisle have their family castle and estate, and the church of St. Martins, designed by Philip Webb, contains windows by Burne-Jones. In nearby Carlisle there is a fine castle (left), which is one of many where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, and the smallest and most northerly cathedral in England. For the more active, we are on the Cumbrian Cycle Way and indeed are at a crossroad from all points on the compass, and for the golfing enthusiasts there is the championship Brampton course in the spectacular setting of Talkin Tarn. For walkers, Oval House is an ideal starting point for walking Hadrian's Wall. We will also be happy to advise you on visits, drives, cycle routes and walks, and we have leaflets, maps and books for you to browse while you are here. All in all the quiet and undiscovered nature of the area makes it well worth staying that little bit longer! Brampton is 9 miles east of Carlisle on the A69 - junction 43 off the M6. All roads approaching the town from the east or west on the A69, or the A6071 from Longtown, or the A689 from Alston, bring you on to Main Street. You will find Oval House at the east of Main Street - look for our sign next to the Methodist Church near the only pedestrian crossing in town. A welcoming cup of tea awaits you upon your arrival.
