Top of most people's lists is the spectacular view along the River Nidd, which winds through a limestone gorge and passes under the high, arched railway viaduct, built in 1851. A stroll along the riverside lets you take in the sights, do a little gentle boating or treat yourself to an ice cream or a cafe meal. On the opposite bank is Mother Shipton's Cave, former home of England's most famous prophetess, and the Petrifying Well where everything from a top hat to a teddy bear gradually turns to stone. Looking down over viaduct and river, the town's ruined Norman castle complete with dungeon and sally port stands guard with the Courthouse Museum situated in the oldest surviving building. The castle stands a very short walk away from the town centre where you'll find small galleries, craft shops, traditional and speciality shops and, every Wednesday, an open-air market.
