Some excerpts from the website of Newton House that might be useful
Whether it's sightseeing the cathedrals and castles, walking the dales and moors or simply enjoying Yorkshire's finest in food and drink, Newton House is ideally situated for exploring the surrounding culture and countryside... Knaresborough is a medieval market town with a charm all of its own, offering a host of attractions for visitors. Top of most people's lists is the spectacular view along the River Nidd, which winds through a limestone gorge and passes under the high, arched railway viaduct, built in 1851. A stroll along the riverside lets you take in the sights, do a little gentle boating or treat yourself to an ice cream or a cafe meal. On the opposite bank is Mother Shipton's Cave, former home of England's most famous prophetess, and the Petrifying Well where everything from a top hat to a teddy bear gradually turns to stone. Looking down over viaduct and river, the town's ruined Norman castle complete with dungeon and sally port stands guard with the Courthouse Museum situated in the oldest surviving building. The castle stands a very short walk away from the town centre where you'll find small galleries, craft shops, traditional and speciality shops and, every Wednesday, an open-air market. To keep the family entertained, a modern swimming pool stands less than 200 yards from Newton House and, elsewhere in the town, you'll find crazy golf, pitch putt and tennis. After a few hours spent shopping or sightseeing, you'll no doubt be looking forward to a drink and something to eat. Knaresborough has no shortage of cafes and there are pubs aplenty in the town and its surrounding villages. Mark Lisa have lived and worked here for over 20 years and are only too happy to advise you on places to eat, countryside walks and great days out.
