The main link with a turbulent past is the common riding which is held in June when up to 500 horsemen are saddled by daybreak to ride the marches to re-enact the story of Flodden. In the past often simply considered a convenient stopping off place on the way to the Highlands, the Scottish Borders is now recognised as a rewarding holiday area in its own right. The reasons are not hard to find, beautiful scenery ranging form rugged coasts and lonely hills to peaceful cultivated farmland punctuated with charming towns and villages. The scope for enjoyment and relaxation is immense. Brown trout and rainbows on numerous lochs in the area. Salmon permits may be obtained for the river Ettrick by prior arrangement with the Hotel. Other Local Activities. The often turbulent history of the Borders has left a rich legacy of fascinating buildings for the visitor to admire including the fortified tower houses of the Border Reivers, the ruined abbeys and many of Scotland's most famous country mansions whose gardens and doors are open to the public.
