Things to Do in the Area. You could spend a lifetime enjoying everything there is to do in the Camden area -- in fact, many people do, returning to stay with us year after year! Whatever your interests, you'll find plenty to keep you busy at any time of the year. We enjoy sharing our local knowledge, too, so please feel free to ask for suggestions. Camden is known as the Jewel of the Maine Coast for good reason: the natural beauty of this area, where the mountains meet the sea, is truly exceptional. You'll want to get out and enjoy it, whether for a picnic, hiking, biking, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, or simply exploring quietly meandering roads. They'll lead you to antiques shops, artists' and artisans' studios, auctions, flea markets, and unspoiled fishing villages at the tips of rugged peninsulas. This is also a great central location for daytrips to such destinations as Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park, Searsport (for antiquing and the Penobscot Marine Museum), Boothbay Harbor, and Freeport. Right in Camden, and in neighboring Rockport and Rockland, you'll find a wide variety of dining choices, from lobster to luxurious. There are dozens of shops and galleries to explore, too, as well as excellent museums to visit. There's a movie theatre right in town, two great Opera Houses (in Camden and Rockport) and Strom Auditorium at the High School offering concerts and plays year 'round, and a landmark library with changing art shows. The harbor is alive with boating traffic of all sorts from spring through fall, and five of the vessels in Maine's historic Windjammer Fleet sail out of here on weekly cruises. Sightseeing excursions of a couple of hours are available on a number of boats, both sail and power. Throughout the year, there are numerous special events including arts and crafts shows, fairs, Windjammer Weekend, Christmas by the Sea, and several intriguing conferences. Highly regarded schools offer courses and workshops in such pursuits as photography and furniture crafting, too. If you're the athletic type, you'll enjoy the variety of sports facilities, from scenic golf courses, to tennis courts, a skateboard park, and a wonderful YMCA, where you can obtain a day pass to all the facilities. Just looking for a peaceful place for a walk? There's the 5800-acre Camden Hills State Park, Merryspring Horticultural Park, Nature Conservancy properties, and more. When autumn's colors ignite the scenery, it's time for an afternoon of apple picking or leisurely leaf peeping. When the snows fly, there's cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, and downhill skiing and tobogganing at Camden's own Snow Bowl. At any time of year, a stay in Camden at the Towne Motel is a perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Come visit us soon! Camden Area Chamber of Commerce. Camden Hills State Park.
