A number of movies have been filmed in the Camden area. The Whitehall Inn has been featured in two of them, including Stephen King's Thinner.. But the most famous and notorious was Peyton Place, an American cinema classic. It was based on a novel that was a best-seller despite being banned in many homes, schools and libraries. Camden welcomed 20th Century Fox after New Hampshire, the book's setting, and Vermont turned them down. The controversial movie never won an Oscar despite nine nominations, but it opened the door to social commentary on many once taboo subjects, such as sex, alcohol, spousal abuse and incest. The Whitehall Inn was one of the centers of attraction for the filming in 1957. The New York Times called the inn a perfect choice as the great pictorial beauty on an elm-lined street, with white clapboards, a typical small New England town inn.. The large verandah of the Whitehall Inn, with its many rocking chairs, made famous in the movie, continues to welcome guests today. A 50th anniversary celebration of the movie in 2007 was heralded in news stories seen around the world, and movie fans came from everywhere to see memorabilia and meet some of those involved in the making of the film. Peyton Place and Thinner both featured wide shots of the Whitehall Inn. There was a notable porch scene filmed on the inn's porch as well. Thinner also converted the lobby of the inn into a large restaurant for a scene of gluttony involving the main character. Scene from Thinner filmed at The Whitehall Inn
Camden, Maine's full service inn reservations@whitehall-inn.com. The Whitehall Inn has been the first choice for discerning visitors coming to Camden, Maine, since 1901, many of whom stay year after year. We're one of the few places left in Maine that will evoke the feeling of summers 100 years ago. As soon as you enter our spacious lobby, you will know why royalty, a US President and many, many celebrities over the years have found this to be their holiday retreat. We can't guarantee that you won't sit at breakfast next to a Secret Service agent, but we can promise you will find this to be a very friendly and informal visit. The historic 45-room full service inn offers a romantic getaway on the side of Mt. Battie, a short walk to Camden Harbor. More than a bed and breakfast or BB, the inn is not someone's home. It was built for lodging as a summer hotel and has an inviting lobby, full service restaurant, and pub fare in a beautiful new bar. Comfy beds and imported linens help provide a romantic inn environment for couples. Our connecting rooms and suites also make it perfect for a family. The inn is non-smoking. An upscale but affordable lodging experience!
The property consists of the main inn, which has 40 rooms, nearly all with private baths. An annex, a shingle style cottage from the turn of the century, offers 5 rooms including a 3 bed, 2 bath suite unlike any other in the mid-coast region. This is a historical lodging facility, on the National Register of Historic Places, where you will find a mix of simple but comfortable appointments and antiques and luxury imported bed linens and the most comfortable beds on the planet. Many rooms have claw foot tubs. All rooms in the main inn share a telephone switchboard system now rarely seen outside museums, mixed with high speed internet and other modern niceties. Breakfast is a feast that is sure to satisfy until dinnertime, when we feature world class offerings in two newly-decorated venues. The inn is located in an area of grand historic homes, a 10 minute stroll from the harbor.
So much to see do. Island excursions; mountain climbs by foot or by car; boat trips, motor or sail; sea kayaks, fresh or saltwater swimming, art museums, shopping, hiking, biking, three area golf courses, and a highly recommended air and car museum with frequent and colorful events. And there are parades and festivals, including Rocklands world famous salute to the lobster, country fairs, antique shops, theatres, including a recently restored old movie house and a surprising ongoing array of local and national entertainment. We have lots of information to share with you about things to keep you busy. Just ask.

Ours is a landmark lodging property, one of four hotels in the area begun more than 100 years ago. Only 2 have survived, and our inn has retained much of its earlier charm and character. The inn has welcomed a king, a U.S. President and other political notables, many fabled screen stars and sports heroes. And the guest list includes a supermodel, a legendary TV anchorman and a world-renowned singer-songwriter. And, of course, one of Americas most beloved poets, Edna St. Vincent Millay, was discovered in the hotel. We have been featured in two. Hollywood productions. including the original 1957 Peyton Place and more recently Stephen Kings Thinner. Your current innkeepers, Greg Sue Marquise, are only the sixth proprietors in the inns more than 100 years of operation.

Book 2 or more nights for 2 persons beginning Sunday through Thursday, and you will be our guest for a 2-hour schooner cruise for 2 persons. is a classic member of Camden's famous sailing fleet. Built in 1927, the 21-passenger schooner never has a fixed itinerary. Capt. Aaron Lincoln is always going to sail where the wind is best. He may hug the shoreline and go toward Lincolnville beach or Indian Island lighthouse or head to one of the thousands of islands that grace Penobscot Bay, like Mark Island a bald eagle rookery. He may go and look at some mansions that you can only see from the water and then make up some gossip. Every trip will see a lighthouse, other traditional sailing vessels, visiting yachts, Maine's rocky coastline, mansions, marine wildlife, and of course seagulls. In addition to shore birds, he often spots seals, bald eagles, and guillemots (a cousin to the puffin). Must call 1-800-789-6565. Cannot be combined with other discounts.
