Two miles from Ashford is the historic market town of Bakewell, thought to have been founded by the Saxon king, Edward the Elder about 920 AD. There are two Saxon crosses in the churchyard and the oldest of all the bridges across the Wye - it was originally built in the 15th Century. is now a thriving market town with a cattle market every Monday and many interesting shops with local produce. It is also the administrative centre of the Peak District National Park Authority. About 1 mile from Woodland View in the opposite direction is Monsal Head, a famous viewpoint over Monsal Dale - a deep-cut valley which the River Wye has carved out of the surrounding limestone.
