Nesjavellir is near Lake Thingvallavatn, so it is a stone;s throw from Iceland;s main hallowed site, Thingvellir. There Icelanders gathered in 930 and founded Althingi, their national parliament. Thus commenced the Icelandic Commonwealth that lasted until 1262. Icelanders were then an independent nation, and Iceland;s seat of government was Althingi at Thingvellir. Althingi was then at once a legislature and a court. There, laws for the country were enacted and disputes between people resolved. Althingi is therefore the oldest working parliament in the world. Thingvellir was the nation;s
meeting place until 1798, or for 868 continuous years. Since then, Thingvellir has been the place where Icelanders have gathered to celebrate the main milestones in the country;s history. Probably the most prominent national event was in 1874 when Icelanders celebrated the 1000th anniversary of the country;s settlement and their first constitution, which Christian IX, King of Denmark, presented to the nation on that occasion. The Republic of Iceland was founded at Thingvellir on 17 June 1944. Thingvellir was often the scene of the Icelandic Sagas, most of which were written in the 13th century. The Icelandic Sagas are deemed Icelanders; greatest treasures and their main contribution to world culture. Thingvellir is also a very remarkable geological area. Scientists believe that the land on which Thingvellir stands straddles a slip fault and has been subsiding for 200,000 to 300,000 years. This broken subsidence belt runs from Hengill in the South north through Kaldidalur Valley. The area of subsidence has sunk over 40 meters since being covered by the lava flowing over Thingvellir. During this process, the Almannagja and Hrafnagja Gorges were formed as well as the depression on the west side where Lake Thingvallavatn is now. It is often said that Europe and America meet at Thingvellir, and this is not so far from the truth because the subsidence area has been formed where the tectonic plates of Europe and America are drifting apart.
