The lakes are one of the main characteristics of this small region, along with the alpine mountain chain: there are more then ten lakes, and most of them can be seen from Campo dei Fiori, the mountain which overlooks most of the area. In the touristic region of the great Italian lakes lake Maggiore (also known as Verbano) is located westward and belongs partly to Italy, between Lombardy and Piedmont, and partly (about one seventh) to Switzerland. The lake is surrounded by the impressive alpine mountain chain, which is often covered in snow and many villas, some historical, which are surrounded by flourishing Italian or English (also called romantic) gardens, with balustrades, statues and water games.
