The hotel's history began in 1850 when the Coffin Hotel was built to offer first class accomodations to an ever-increasing number of hunting and fishing enthusiasts. After being expanded and renovated in 1870, the Coffin Hotel was burned to the ground in 1878 in a fire that was deemed accidental. Businessman John Baker took over construction and restoration and built a hotel complex to wich he gave his name : Baker's Hotel. Throughout the years, John Baker's hotel remained a family business. Unfortunately, John Baker's business eventually found itself in financial difficulty, largely beauceause of government legislation which eliminated private fishing clubs one by one to create provincial reserves. In October 1930, almost fifty years after his modest beginnings, hotelkeeper John Baker passed away leaving as his legacy a firmly established hotel complex whose reputation was known well beyond the borders of Canada. Baker's Hotel will long be recognized as a recreational empire, a fine example of the elaborate architectural style which was popular at the turn of the last century and the first beginnings of the tourist industry in the Gaspe peninsula. In 1972, 12 more motel units were added to the complex. On July 31, 1975, in another streak of bad luck, Baker's Hotel was once again destroyed by fire. What was left of the complex after the fire was later transformed into apartment dwellings. A few months after the fire, four employees of the Cegep de la Gaspesie et des Iles decided to invest in the construction of a new hotel on the old Baker's Hotel site. This new hotel, named Auberge des Gouverneurs began its operations in June 1978 with 44 guest rooms plus the 12 motel units first built for the Baker's Hotel. In 2001, following major modifications and expansion, the vocation of the hotel was completely changed. 14 new rooms were added, along with a 102-seat cinema and a health centre. The O'Pub Resto-bar, the meeting rooms and the dining room were all expanded. Confident in our experience and know-how, we decided to operate on our own under the name Hotel des Commandants once our franchise contract with Quality Inn expired. We are immensely proud of the quality and variety of services we offer, and our goal is to make the Hotel des Commandants a destination in it's own right.
