Built in the 1740s, this early full cape style home is one of the oldest and largest on Cape Cod. Originally situated just across the street at water's edge, the home was once thought to have been moved back to its present location in 1807, hence the name of the property. That move enabled its owner, whaling captain Stephen Nickerson, the much needed space to service his whaling business while raising his children comfortably back from his wharf, now long gone. The Nickersons were early Provincetown's most prominent family, well liked and respected. Staunch abolitionists, in the mid-1800s they were one of only four Provincetown families active in the Underground Railroad, and for many years sheltered slaves fleeing Southern plantations, enroute to freedom in the Maritimes. Ultimately owning three whaling vessels Nickerson became a wealthy man for his day. For a brief time, when demand for whale oil was at its peak, he and his fellow whaling captains made Provincetown the richest community per-capita in Massachusetts. Other than 1807 House, four Nickerson homes remain in the West End, including the beautifully restored small cape at 72 Commercial Street, known as the oldest house in town. Even as a private home, before it became an inn, 1807 House hosted numerous guests of interest, among them, Eugene O'Neill and his wife Carlotta Monterey. We invite you to come enjoy 1807 House, and make your own memories. Relax and sun at the adjacent neighborhood beach, stretch out on a back yard lounge chair, read a good book in a shady garden nook. Or hop on your bike and explore the town. Close by you will find superb restaurants, delis, shops, galleries, tennis courts, a sailing club, bike and boat rentals. And, when you are tired from tennis or swimming, you may rest assured that your 1807 House quarters will provide comfort and quiet, and the recharging serenity you seek.
