From the harbor you can either go fishing in the Baltic Sea or try your luck in the shallow waters of the Groer Jasmunder Bodden. Fishing on the open sea allows you to reach the fishing grounds within Germanys maritime boundaries north and south of Kap Arkona and Tromper Wiek. Cod, salmon and sea trout are the main fish caught. Depending on the time of year, there are also plenty of herring, hornfish and flounder. The Bodden waters are home to pike, walleye, perch and other types of fish. Please be aware of the regulations for the recreational fishing season (closing times). Important Note: You need to have a valid fishing license in order to fish! Mr. Gerd Hasselberg, Glowe harbor master, is an authorized license issuer. Arrangement of fishing

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT GLOWE AND SURROUNDINGS. The coastal village of Glowe was first settled by Slavic people, who inhabited the region of a former young moraine headland, today the so-called Konigshorn. The Slavs named their settlement glova (meaning head). The village was first documented and registered in 1314 under this name. Glowe lies directly on Tromper Wiek, the starting point of a ca. 10-kilometer-long (6.2-mile-long) sandy beach called the Schaabe, and connects the Jasmund and Wittow peninsulas. For centuries Glowe was known as a traditional fishing village. Today only a privately run fishery with its own smokehouse is left. With its expansive beach, Glowe is the largest seaside resort in the northern part of Rugen. When walking along the coastline, you will always have a view of the KAP ARKONA (ARKONA CAPE) lighthouse. Nature lovers value the connectedness between sea and Bodden (shallow, nearly enclosed, irregularly shaped embayments formed from flooding and typical to the Baltic Sea coastline in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), as well as the wide variety of flora and fauna found in Glowe and surroundings. Wind and water have formed an incomparable landscape full of picturesque and beautiful scenery. The pine trees on the Schaabe are some of the trees in Europes forest belt under protection. Historically Glowe has made itself known beyond the island through the three attempts made in 1860, 1937 and 1950 by the military of the respective time to excavate a
channel between the sea and the Bodden and the establishment of the coastal
radio station Rugen-
Radio in 1931 (discontinued in 1996). Today the Glowe community and tourist association are trying to return the Northern German style to the former fishing village, while at the same time trying to adapt to the wishes of todays tourists. With the establishment of a modern childrens rehabilitation
center in 1994, a new era was ushered in: Following that, new harbor facilities (marina) for sailing, fishing and passenger boats were built in 2000. A new beach promenade and a large public square (the Kurplatz) with
shops and Strandkorb (a covered wicker beach chair) rentals were opened in 2002. Glowe has been known for decades as a vacation spot for young and old and for families. Thanks to its
healthy and stimulating climate year-round, its excellently situated beach and its untouched nature, the seaside resort of Glowe has once again become a tourist magnet. Being designated as a Baltic Sea resort in the near future will make the recreational area even more attractive and exciting. Glowe is a perfect place for you to go on long hikes or cycling
tours or to go fishing in the sea or the Bodden. The long sandy beach is drawing more and more nudists. The officially recognized recreational area of Glowe also includes the following places: BOBBIN - Gothic church St. Paul built ca. 1400 from massive stones. POLCHOW - situated on the Grosser Jasmunder Bodden. RUSCHVITZ - according to legend, the birthplace of Klaus Stortebeker. SPYKER - with castle grounds (formerly owned by legendary Swedish field marshal von Wrangel). KAMPE and BALDERECK - former pick-up points for casual laborers. Steep
banks near Glowe. Nighttime atmosphere
