Some excerpts from the website of Captain's Quarters that might be useful
What Captain's Quarters has to offer you for a comfortable stay Our
rooms and facilities. Enjoy the maritime atmosphere throughout our house, all
rooms, the hall, the
lounge and the
breakfast room are decorated in nautical style. There is a collection of captains pictures and interesting nauticaliae (nautical items) around the house, some with short explanations. Our
guestrooms feature wall to wall carpeting, chairs, dressing table,
lounge rack,
hairdryer,
direct dial phone,
tea and
coffee making facilities,
TV and double
telephone sockets to plug in your laptop. In each
guestroom there is a photograph of the sailing ship it is named after with some explanation. All
bathrooms are tastefully tiled and consist of
shower,
toilet and washhand basin.
Heating is central, with individual temperature adjustment possibilities for the
room. For guests travelling with babies, we can provide a travel-cot and all
rooms are spacious enough to accommodate it comfortably. We take special pride in the cleanliness of our house. On the groundfloor you enter the hall with an antique
bureau which serves as a reception
desk. The floor surface throughout the groundfloor ( except the carpeted
guestrooms and tiled
bathroom ) is of laminated wood (japanese cherry). From the hall you reach the Messroom where we serve. The Galley (
kitchen) is adjacent to the Messroom. There are two fully wheelchair accessible
guestrooms on the groundfloor. Both
rooms are also very convenient for senior citizens. These
rooms and the
shared bathroom are accessed from a side lobby. The
guestroom ''Boa Esperanca'' is a
single room'' (1 single bed ). There is a washbasin in the
room and it shares the
bathroom, which is adjacent, with the
twin room. It is named after the portuguese replica of a caravelle, which serves as a sail training ship. The
guestroom ''Eagle'' is a
twin room (2 single beds). It also has a washbasin and shares the
bathroom which is adjacent to the
single room. The
room is named after the United States Coast Guard Sailing Ship ''Eagle''. On the first floor the landing features a series of prints illustrating the so called Grain Races. These were races of sailing ships from Europe to Australia and back. There is some interesting explanatory text. A ''Captain's picture'' and information about this art form are displayed. On the wall there is a half model of aYacht ''Fair Winds, she was opened and memorabilia of her Sark Tall Ship Races. From the landing you enter the residents
lounge called quarterdeck and
two guestrooms named Asgard and Astrid. The quarterdeck faces the harbour and the Marina and the big window offers a magnificent view. It is like a small martime museum, yet a very comfortable
room to relax in. It features ample seating around the main table, which is made of an original sailing ship's steering wheel, and a 3 seater couch. There is also a single, very comfortable armchair. On one wall there is an electric fireplace surrounded by a built in unit mahogany and teak, which houses literature, music cassettes and CDs for your use. The main features of the decoration are the sextant (nautial navigational instrument), several ''captain'' pictures'', compasses, a handheld harpoon used for whaling. All nautical items are originals and were actually used and infomation was provided. The whole
room is very bright as there are 2 more windows towards Denis Quay. The
guestroom Asgard an
ensuite room (with own
bathroom ) with one double and one single bed. It's window is towards Denis Quay. The
room is named after the Irish sail training vessel ''Asgard''. The
guestroom Astrid is an
ensuite room (with own
bathroom) with a double bed. It's window is to the backyard and neighbouring
gardens with old walls of former buildings still standing there and partly overgrown. The
room is named after the British sail training ship ''Astrid''. On the third floor the
guestrooms Eendracht and Falken are situated. The
guestroom Eendracht is an
ensuite room (with own
bathroom) with 3 single beds. The
room is partially by a wall into a larger and smaller section. In the larger section there are 2 single beds, which can be joined to form a double bed. The
bathroom is also accessed from here. The third bed is in a smaller section. This is an ideal
room for a family as we can offer a spare bed or a travel-cot in the
room's smaller section. The two windows face Denis Quay. The
room is named after the Dutch Sail training ship Eendracht. The
guestroom Falken is an
ensuite room (with own
bathroom) with two single beds, these can be joined to make a double bed. This
room has a lot of character as it features a wooden beam, a dormer window to the backyard and a view of part of the town. The
room is named after a Sail training vessel of the Swedish Navy Falken. ©Copyright 2003 Captain's Quarters
Wheelchair access throughout the house. The premises are located close to the waterfront and town
centre with very little difference in elevation to either of them. Unfortunately, we cannot offer private
parking but usually there is space along the street in front of the house with a level approach to the front door. There is only a slight ramp up within the rebate area of the door itself. A door
phone is within easy reach and you can call us any time for assistance if needed. When planning the ground floor layout, we took advice from The National Rehabilitation Board. All doors on the ground floor are at least 75cm (29 1/2 inches) wide. A small side lobby off the entrance hall leads to our accessible accommodation consisting of
one room with a single bed Boa Esperanca and
one room with 2 single beds Eagle. Both
rooms have space enough for a turning circle of 1.5m (59 inches). The adjacent
bathroom for these
2 rooms also has a turing circle of 1.5m (59 inches ) and features a drive under wash hand basin, a
toilet with 1 vertical and 1 horizontal grab rail on one side and a hinged support rail on the other. The drive-in
shower is equipped with a removable seat with one vertical and one horizontal grab rail. Eagle and Boa Esperanca have a
remote control TV,
direct dial phone,
Tea/
Coffee making facilities, a
hairdryer, and Wash hand basin, a lower set of coats hooks and fixtures to lower the rail for the clothes hangers in the wardrobes. The Messroom where
breakfast is served is just across the hall and has enough free space for manoeuvring. Wheelchair users who have stayed with us in the past were all very happy with our facilities. If you have any further questions why not
