The Falcon was established in 1798 when, as a Lodging House, it provided accommodation for the Captains of the Merchant Vessels that were trading or taking shelter in Bude Haven. After the opening of the Bude Canal, the Lodging House became the Falcon Crest Inn and in 1826 was further extended to become the Falcon Hotel. These developments were made while under the patronage of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland who was one of the largest landowners in Bude at the time. The Aclands were an ancient Devonshire family from Killerton near Exeter, and the Falcon was so named as a Falcon forms the crest of the Acland Family Coat of Arms. With the Canal Company Offices based in Exeter a regular Coach Service started. This service was extended in 1872 when the Hotel then became the headquarters for the transport system of this area. Many famous people have stayed here in the past including Alfred Lord Tennyson who in 1848 broke his leg when he fell over the garden wall. He wrote several letters afterwards saying he knew of no better place in which to convalesce.

The Falcon is the oldest coaching house in North Cornwall and was once the headquarters for the four-horse coaches running between Bideford, Clovelly, Bude, Boscastle, Tintagel and Newquay. Travellers have been welcomed here for nearly two hundred years and that old-time warm, friendly atmosphere is apparent as soon as you walk through the front door. Overlooking the Bude Canal and with its beautiful walled gardens, the Hotel has one of the finest settings in Cornwall. The Falcon Hotel - Bude - Cornwall - England - EX23 8SD Tel: 44 (0)1288 352005

Bude is a delightful little Cornish town and has been developed from the original fishing village of Bude Haven. Increasingly regarded as a quality resort, fifty per cent of the visitors have been here before. The friendly atmosphere, the wide open spaces and the dramatic scenery have inspired writers, painters and poets for centuries. It is this inspiration that encourages our guests to relax and unwind from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Bude Canal has a reputation as one of the finest coarse fishing waters in Cornwall. Roach, bream and carp are caught here, Over downlands and clifftops you have the freedom to ramble for miles, unchanged in appearance from the days of the wreckers. The Loveliest Peace of the West Country is the local phrase adopted, that perfectly describes the special nature of this unspoilt area of coast and countryside, where Cornwall meets with Devon. This is a land of mystery, of magic and romance, with miles of glorious surfing beaches, towering cliffs, and sandy coves, little fishing harbours and wide open spaces of moorland. Fairs, fetes and festivals are all part of the Cornish way of life and visitors are always warmly welcomed. Within a few miles of Bude there are many exciting places to visit. Southwards, we have picture book fishing villages like Port Isaac and Port Quin, with their narrow winding streets, the Victorian harbour of Boscastle, King Arthurs Castle and Merlins Cave at Tintagel. Northwards, we have the wildness of Hartland Quay and the uniqueness of Clovelly, with flower strewn cottages tumbling down the cobbled streets to the 14th century harbour below.
