Frequently Asked Questions. Where are Turks and Caicos Islands? The islands are located approximately 600 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, USA. What activities can we enjoy on North Caicos? Snorkeling, kayaking, bird watching (the Flamingo pond look out post is close by), fishing. Visits to Wades Green historic plantation site, and to the ancient caves on Middle Caicos. Visit to Cottage Pond, which is the deepest lake in the TCI and leads out to the to the ocean underground. Visit to the local farm where you can buy home grown fruits and vegetables. Fishing. You can fish along the causeway that is connecting North and Middle Caicos or on the beach in front of the villa. What amenities are there in La Villa Rose? 3 double bedrooms (2 with double beds, and one with 2 single beds). Air conditioning in all bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms have double doors to the terrace facing the beach. Ceiling fans. 2 bathrooms, one en suite to the master bedroom, and family bathroom. Fully-fitted kitchen (electric cooker, large refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, + all standard kitchenware, less dishwasher). Washing machine, no dryer, but there is a washing line. DSL Internet access via wireless router if you bring your own laptop. CD player, DVD player (bring your own DVDs). There are games puzzles and books in the living room. 3 bicycles, but we do not guarantee that they are puncture-free and suggest you bring inner tubes (bicycle tyre sizes - one is 26 x 2.125, and two are 26 x 1.95). There are garden chairs and sun loungers, and a hammock. Two terraces face the sea (one with bug screening) and there is a roof terrace with a good view out to sea. Bed linen and towels are provided. There will be soap and toilet rolls in the bathroom. La Villa Rose will be cleaned before your arrival, and the beds made up, and basic fresh produce will be put in the kitchen for your use. You will find further information together with instructions on the use of the 2 kayaks in the FOLDER WITH INFORMATION FOR VISITORS in the villa. Please read these. They kayaks are peddle or paddle and it is important to have the pedals in the correct position when coming ashore. It is also important that you use the live jackets provided for your safety. (Please note that the catamaran and wind surfers are not for use of guests). How do we get around North Caicos? Local car rental operators charge about $85 per day. Taxis provide routine transportation, as well as some day trips. There are three bicycles in the garage for the use of guests. We cannot guarantee that these bicycles will be puncture-free. The roads are rough and the bicycles are not new. It is advisable to bring spare inner tubes (1 of them have wheels size 26 x 1.95 and 2 of them have wheel sizes 26 x 2.125). It is also possible to rent bicycles. What facilities are there on the island? The main grocers is about 3 quarters of a mile from the house and is open until around 7pm. The post office and other shops are a little further away. The nearest restaurants are the Silver Palm restaurant about half a mile to the left along the beach, and Pelican Beach hotel abut the same distance to the right, both of which serve great food and are within easy walking distance along the beach. Big Joshs pub is about one third of a mile from the house, and you can buy liquor from the store behind the pub. The nearest gasoline station is about 4 miles away. A new development, the St Charles, is about a mile along the beach to the right of the house facing the beach (beyond the Pelican Beach Hotel). Firstly, guests must fly to the international airport on Providenciales (Provo, the adjacent island), and then take a fifteen-minute internal flight to North Caicos. Provo is a 75 minute flight from Miami, under 3 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina and 3 hours from New York and Boston. The flight from Toronto (direct during the winter months) takes about 4 hours. Direct flights, both outbound and return, are operated by British Airways from London Heathrow on Sundays. Details of the short hop to North Caicos will be given to prospective guests. There is also a ferry service from Leaward, on Providenciales, to North Caicos. On arrival at North Caicos you will be met by Mr Mac Campbell, the caretaker of La Villa Rose. He will take you to the house and he and Nicky Gardiner will be responsible for looking after you during your stay. The Island North Caicos is a 41-square-mile island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The first thing that strikes visitors about the island is its apparent isolation from civilisation. While there are several hotels and restaurants (the larger of which accept credit cards). Recently The Turks and Caicos Bank has opened a branch in Bottle Creek approximately 8 miles from La Villa Rose. The currency is US dollars. The island has not been spoilt by sprawling seafront developments despite its proximity to the booming Providenciales. The locals all know one another and there is a genuine sense of community. The people are the friendliest, most welcoming group that you will find anywhere in the world, and crime is virtually non-existent. The population is approximately 1500, many of whom live in one of the four main settlements at Bottle Creek, Whitby, Kew and Sandy Point. Whitby beach is a seven mile stretch of white sand which you will often have to yourself. Three tiny islands, known as Three Marys Cays, have good snorkeling and the second hosts a huge osprey nest. The islands flamingos, frequently congregate at Flamingo Pond, where there is a special viewpoint (about a mile from the house) from which these fascinating birds can be observed. A window into the islands history can be found at the ruins of Wades Green sugar plantation next to Kew, one of the most successful plantations of the loyalist era. North Caicos has a tropical climate, with an average yearly temperature of 83F (28C). There is very little variation between the seasons but the hottest months are September and October when 90-95F is possible. However the Easterly trade winds provide enough of a breeze at this time to prevent the heat becoming oppressive. The Turks and Caicos islands are a colony of the British crown, so the local language is English and driving is on the left-hand side, although you will rarely meet another car on the road!
