Moate gets its name from An Mota Grainne Oige (a Motte-and-Bailey type of Norman fortification that was originally established nearby). The town owes its origins to Quakers who settled and started industries in the area towards the end of the 17th century. Moate, the third largest town in County Westmeath, is situated near Athlone, along the N6 route between Dublin and Galway. Moate has a strong musical tradition and is home to music legends Tony Allen (of Foster Allen Fame), TR Dallas and Ray Lynam.
