ABOUT GRAND TURK ISLAND. Grand Turk is the political capital and financial center of the Turks and Caicos Islands. This small island is approximately six miles wide by one mile wide. The island is reputed to be the site of Christopher Columbus first landfall in the New World and was founded by Bermudan Salt Rakers in the 1600s. Grand Turk has maintained much of its Old World charm. Donkeys and horses still wander freely down the narrow streets. Bermudan colonial architecture from the salt era blends with colorful Caribbean-style buildings. Landmarks include historic Duke and Front Streets along the western shore, a recently renovated 140-plus year old lighthouse at the north end of the island and the Turks and Caicos National Museum which houses artifacts form the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest shipwreck in the Americas.

Whale watching (late January through early April). Fishing (bottom/reef fishing and deep sea fishing). Day trips by boat to uninhabited Gibbs Cay with picnic and snorkeling. Boat outings to neighboring islands

The extensive coral reef system surrounding the Turks Caicos Islands provides a world-class diving experience. Grand Turk, in particular, has some of the most spectacular and pristine wall diving in the Caribbean. Located just a few hundred yards from shore on the leeward side of the island, the reef starts at depths of just 30-35 feet and the wall plunges to more than 7,000 feet. The diving here is calm and clear with visibility averaging 100 feet and the water temperature ranging from 82-84 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and 74-78 degrees in the winter. The abundant tropical flora and fauna, fish and other marine life make the diving here truly memorable. We work with the best and most experienced dive operators on the island and will arrange dive packages for you upon request. Diving equipment is available for rent and diving instruction is available for visitors who want to learn to scuba dive.
