The Isle of Wight is a diamond shaped island, a real jewel of beauty. Every generation and all interests are catered for with clean sandy beaches, numerous Manor Houses, World Famous Tiger Sanctuary, Shire Horse Centre, award winning Model Village, Dinosaur Farm and Museum, sea and freshwater angling, horse riding, numerous golf courses, animal parks and many scenic coastal and inland walks - a ramblers' paradise! In the mid 19th century Sandown's potential as a seaside resort was recognized and it soon became popular with many well known visitors including Lewis Carroll, Charles Darwin, John Keats and Henry Longfellow. Many of the large hotels along the esplanade reflect this popularity, still retaining their fine Victorian and Edwardian facades with terraces, balconies and ornamental wrought ironwork. It is one of the typical tourist villages on the Island with its regular Monday market, arcades, the pier with attractions and lovely sandy beaches, all overlooked by Culver Down. Along the seafront to the north of the town, you will find a Dinosaur Museum, Brown's pitch 'n' putt golf course, bowling greens and crazy golf course. Also, this part of Sandown is home to the Isle of Wight Tiger Big Cat Sanctuary, where they specialise in breeding and care of some of the planet's most severely threatened creatures. This is located in Granite Fort, which was in operation during the war to protect the Island's coastline. Sandown Bay has six miles of sandy beaches and is just two minutes level walk from the hotel. There is plenty on offer for the young and not-so-young alike.Just around the corner there are buses, shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, whilst nearby there are amusement arcades, pitch 'n' putt, various water activities, and the Island's only pier, boasting adventure golf, ten pin bowling, children's play area and all the fun of the fair. While holidays in Sandown are naturally mostly focused on the beach and sea, the area is also a haven for ramblers, as it is surrounded by glorious countryside with countless places to explore with the Bernay Hotel as your base.
