There are a host of sporting and leisure activities available when you come to stay at the Elm House Hotel. gardens are worth visiting. This is a lovely walk on a summers evening from the hotel either via the Teviot River or along the High Street. Within the surrounding area there is an abundance of large stately homes worth a visit, examples being Floors Castle in Kelso, Mellerstain near Earlston, Thirlestane Castle in Lauder and Bowhill in Selkirk, with its adventure park. There are also the Border Abbeys at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose. These Abbeys are all linked via the Borders Abbey Cycle Route and the more recently completed long distance walking route. The latter passes through the heart of Hawick linking to either Selkirk in the North or Jedurgh in the East. is available to hotel guests on rivers or lochs stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Horse riding and rough shooting can be arranged and for the
golf enthusiast there are numerous excellent courses. If this is your interest why not try the Award Winning. Freedom of the Fairways pass for either 3 or 5 days. The pass will allow you to see and play any of the 14 course in the scheme, from Roxburgh through to Eyemouth, Hawick to Peebles, offering challenging but fair sport for all handicaps. Within the Hawick area there are two 18 hole course, the Vertish and Minto. In addition we are only 40 minutes away from the many east coast courses such as Gullane, Muirfield and Dunbar. The Cyclist is also well catered for with the maze of
quiet roads that criss cross between the sleepy border towns. Enjoy the Cycling Festival in June this based from Hawick, Peebles and Duns. For the mountain biker this area is now a renowned location for tracks within the 7 Stanes Project with tracks close by at Newcastleton and the Glentress and Traquair forests. Walking could not be easier with there being so many different types and nature of walks around Hawick. We can offer the stroll along the Teviot River
Banks to the all day treks. Guided walking
tours are available as well as many around Border towns and houses. There is a walking festival in the Borders during the first week in September, Hawick being one of the regular
centres. For the less energetic, take a visit to one of the local knitwear mill
shops and have an opportunity to buy garments made in cashmere or lambswool. These garments can be purchased at keen prices and are a lovely souvenir of your stay.
