Kymberly Nelson, Co-Founder. Mel and I met in college and have been best friends ever since. We always knew we wanted to do something together professionally, we just didnt know in what form that collaboration would take place. Then, in the third trimester of my pregnancy with my first child, I developed chronic back pain that turned out to be the result of a bone-on-bone degenerative disc disease. I thought the pain would go away once my son was born but it didnt. And so began my nine year struggle with chronic pain: nine years of going from one doctor to the next, nine years of researching alternative therapies searching for answers, nine years of popping pills to take away the pain. It was a horribly dark place. I was trapped in a body that hurt all the time. During this time Melanie never lost faith that I would get better and continued to encourage and support me. She was my constant. And when I finally did get better, we realized that this was our callinghelping other people who are hurting reclaim their lives, showing them that they are not at the mercy of every different doctor, that there is hope. My personal struggle with pain had taught me that one of the reasons Western medicine often falls short is its focus on physical pain to the exclusion of the emotional and spiritual. If someone had been looking at the big picture, I think I would have progressed a lot faster, and this became the impetus for Soul Shine. The past nine years were training for Soul Shine. Melanie Bivens, Co-Founder. I share in Kyms belief that the U.S. healthcare system is broken. I spent many years practicing medical malpractice defense law and the experience left me very disenchanted. I also spent many years watching Kym suffer as the result of a failing system, and through it I grew to understand how important a mind-body-spirit approach is to wellness. So when Kymberly called me one night and told me her idea of creating a wellness network, I immediately thought it was amazing. I could see at the onset that we had the opportunity to change peoples lives in a meaningful way, and I felt blessed to be embarking on this journey with my best friend. Since that day in February 2007 we have moved forward with a truly inspired vision. It is amazing how quickly everything fell into place once Kym and I committed to our vision. It was like the universe was working with us to make this happen. Everybody had said it would take months to find our location, but Kym was driving one day and saw a teeny For Rent sign on the building where we are now located. Six weeks later we moved in. We have had dozens of similar experiences. It has become the usual rather than the unusual for the right people and scenarios to present themselves to us. I want to personally thank the many individuals who continue to support us as we build our dream. I understand now when people say they have found their calling as I truly have found mine. I met Kymberly in 1997. We were next door neighbors and bonded over the fact that I had a newborn baby and she was pregnant. Since then, we have spent endless afternoons playing kickball, basketball, and about 101 other games with our kids in the street. I met Melanie through Kym (playing outside, of course), and together the three of us have shared lots of laughs, lots of tears, and lots of broken windows. Kym and Mel first told me about Soul Shine in early 2007. When they asked whether I would consider getting involved as a graphic designer and a jewelry designer, I was touched, thrilled and overwhelmed all at the same time. I love the idea of taking a holistic approach to wellness. And for me personally, Soul Shine gives me the opportunity to share with others what I have learned through my own wonderful family, as well as to practice the many other things I have still yet to learn. As a graphic designer, the opportunity to have the creative freedom to do what you love and create something from scratch does not come by every day. As a jewelry designer, Soul Shine has been a tremendous launching pad helping me turn into a reality something I had only dreamed of doing. As a friend, I could not have chosen better partners than Melanie and Kymberly. That they chose to share their baby with me still, to this day, gives me the chills. Not long ago I was talking to some friends about their dream job. I feel so lucky to have found mine. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where beef is whats for dinner. At the early age of 17, I realized I was different. I became a vegetarian, and found out that I could actually major in dance. I went off to the University of Nebraska on a dance scholarship and hated it. I realized that modern dance was the art form that spoke to me and ended up transferring to Columbia College in Chicago. There, I got to see almost every major modern dance company in the world and was fortunate enough to actually learn from most of them. It was an amazing experience. One day I broke my foot in dance and was held back an entire year. I didnt get to graduate that year, but I did learn to meditate and use visualization techniques to heal myself. Im pretty sure I healed my broken foot in 14 days. I became engrossed in studying health and wellness, yoga, healing, herbs, essential oils, chakras, and dance movement therapy. I did graduate the following year in 2002, and began performing for a company led by a dance movement therapist. I also started my own line of organic essential oil bodycare. One week before graduation, I began dating my future husband who was an accompanist playing drums for my dance classes. In hindsight, breaking my foot was a blessing in disguise because through it I became interested in healing, and if I hadnt been held back I would never have met my husband. I worked for a holistic chiropractor, a raw vegan restaurant, and numerous spas in Chicago before my then fiance and I made our way out to San Diego with our two cats. Now I realize that Soul Shine is my dream job, where all my past experiences can come together and be put to good use. I truly love getting to be a part of Kymberly Melanies vision of Soul Shine. Soul Shine is a chance for me to continue my healing journey and deepen my studies. I also appreciate the idea that I can make my job into my dream job. I have that choice everydayto make Soul Shine into what I want it to be. Every day is a blessing! To my delight I recognize Kim and Melanie as kindred souls with a passion for supporting a holistic community vision. Soul-Shine has given me the opportunity to join with many of San Diego and North County holistic practitioners. I have always aspired to be a part of a noble group of healers and supporters. I feel like I have found a home.
