Places to visit in town. Car rent of half day tour to visit temples and tourist spots in town is 500 Baht. From the hotel you can walk to see the night market. No need to look for taxi. Gongmoo Hill is attached to town. Bus or car can drive up there as well as by foot about 15 minutes walk. This scene can be viewed from Panorama Hotel just 1 km away. There is a Japanese War Museum in Khunyuam displaying remains of the soldier ambulances, guns, cars etc. Last but not least is that there is no bad impression of Japanese soldiers here. Travel up the Hills to Pangtong Palace Mae-Aw. Asphalted road up to the hill over 1,000 meters above sea level. From Phasue Waterfall to Pangtong palace, Pang-oong National Park and Mae Aw villalge. Car rent to visit those places are Baht 2000. Beautiful garden at Pangtong 2 (Pang Oong) National Park. Close to this site is the original Shan village, an attractive place to see. Good landscape and the garden is beautiful in winter. Mae Aw village, the Guamintang Chinese residence. Mae Aw is famous for tea. You can try it free of charge. Buffalo is rare in town but still used in the village. Fishes in the fish cave. Fish cave is a natural park and it is a place for children and weekend for the family to spend their time just 15 km from town
Mae-Aw, Chinese Yunan village famous for tea plantation. Mae-Aw is the Kuamintang Yunnan Chinese village. The Yunnan food especially porklegs and chinese bread is famous there. The restaurant and the lake. Tea is grown there and you can taste it for free. Pickles and fermented fruits are sold there
Mae Hong Son is the land of caves. Over hundred caves were found especially in Pangmapa District. Lod Cave is open for general public. Inside, apart from various forms of beautiful stalagmites and stalagtites, there is an ancient painting of deer and remains of ancient coffins?, made of teak wood dated back over 2,000 years. If you want to see the intact coffin see them at Peeman Cave about 4 km from Pangmapa but you have to climb up the reef about 30 neters high. It is also famous for trekking and rafting along the Pai River. From heavy rain this year, all waterfalls in Maehongson is attractive. The best one is Maesurin Waterfall in Khunyuam district ahout 80 km from Maehongson city. The height of the fall is 100 meters high, you have to watch it from the opposite hill. Trekking down to the bottom part take around 1 hour, just small track, not for elderlies. Another beautiful one is Phasue Waterfall about 30 km from town with good road to this beautiful waterfall of 8 tiers. Along this route you can visit many hilltribe villages. Another new tourist spot is the Huai Pooling Waterfall at Huaytongor village about 60 km from town. The fall is about 80 meters high and very beautiful at the view point 100 meters distance. Climbing to the bottom of the fall takes 30-40 minutes. This new site is for adventure tour and trekking only. You have to go there either by motorcycle or 4 wheel-drive car. It is laterite road and underconstruction and would be difficult during rainy season. Home stay at Huaytongor village is available and the local guide to the waterfall is 100 baht. Visit Hilltribe villages see the cultural heritage. Many hilltribes live in Mae Hong Son, the hmong, lisu, lahu, and various tribes of karenis. Short time visit to these places and vicinity would take around half day. Car rent is Baht 700. Hilltribe people weave their own colorful cloths. The longneck karen is the most famous one. They are one of the high class and proud of their own culture. Boat trip to longneck karen village and to Nampiangdin, the border village to Burma. Beuatiful ferns, birds and forest along the bank are attractive. Take the binocular with you. Some might think that they are primitive.
