Jungle and Maya site Trips. While Belize has the amazing Barrier Reef, Cayes, and the underwater world, there is adventure waiting ashore! One must also experience the extensive Jungles, the Sacred Caves, the Rivers, the Mountains, and the Maya sites inland Belize! Day trips to some Maya sites and attractions can be made directly from Caye Caulker. Boat trips to the mainland can be arranged that have an early departure and return in late afternoon. We can also suggest lodges to stay at for the more remote inland adventures. This site is a popular trip from Caye Caulker. You first travel by boat to the mainland up a mangrove river then a short distance by vehicle to the site. On the Jungle river you see many birds, orchids and sometimes see crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks. This is the largest Maya site in Belize and one of the most impressive. It is hard to believe that it is larger than the famous Tikal in Guatemala. Caracol started a massive archeology excavation project in 1985, there are 4,000 structures in the 55 square mile Maya site. Belize's tallest pyramid (140 feet)is here in Caracol. A most impressive site and very popular among tourists. Requires a trip across the border into Guatemala. There are about 3,000 structures. This site can also be visited from Caye Caulker. It too requires travel by boat, then land vehicle, then further in the jungle on yet another boat. It is a full day of adventure! The more adventurous inland excursions can include guided trips to Sacred Mayan caves. Since the base rock of Belize is limestone, water erosion over the eons has created thousands of caves. The Mayans believed these caves were entrances to the underworld and used them as places for rituals and sacrifices. Many caves like the ATM cave below contain ceramic artifacts and stone tools. A less strenuous trip that is well worth the time is to visit the Belize Zoo. It is 30 miles from Belize City and is easy to get to via taxi or bus. The animals are well taken care of in a natural jungle rainforest environment. No cages and bars here! Just a section of jungle fenced off for each type. No animals are trapped to populate the zoo. It has become a home and refuge for over 100 Belizean animals. Animals that cannot be returned to the environment are cared for here. Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM). Mayan pottery in ATM cave. Snorkeling And Scuba diving. The Belize Barrier Reef, is the second largest in the world and a spectacular sea sport destination... Mother Natures Best Kept Secret! Less than one mile off Caye Caulker and inside the Belize Barrier Reef, the water is generally calm, ideal for snorkeling and other sea sports. When snorkeling you can experience an open ocean aquarium in less than 6 feet of water and at the most about 20 feet. So if you are new to the snorkeling world, you will feel comfortable in the shallow turquoise water off Caye Caulker. During your underwater viewing adventure you are likely to see Manta and Spotted Eagle Rays, Sea Turtles, Nurse Sharks, a variety of Corals, multiple schools of colorful fish, and occasionally... Dolphins! And if that is not enough, you might have the luck to swim with the Manatees. During their mating season in early summer they might be hanging out in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, located the entire length of North South Caye Caulker. Caye Caulker also has the Caye Caulker Shark and Ray Alley snorkeling spot. This is the ultimate adventure; swimming with the Nurse Sharks and the Sting Rays! Another excellent snorkeling spot is the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The reserve is located about two miles from Ambergris Caye and about 8 - 10 miles from CC. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve was established in 1987 and is one of the best marine life Reserves in the world. So pack your swim suit and come join in the sea world adventure. No need to bring your gear! We have a variety of licensed tour operates that will take care of you. We work with local Caye Caulker tour operators, so we are able to make all the arrangements for you. You can either go on a motor boat or go on a sailboat, the choice is yours. The tour costs range anywhere from $45.00 US dollars for a full day snorkel tour or less than that for a half day. Or you can just be on your own and snorkel right off the Island. The popular Split area has it's own charm and is great for swimming. Remember the CC motto: GO SLOW! There are three dive operations based on Caye Caulker. They have trips to the local reefs, to Hol Chan marine reserve, and to the outer atolls such as the Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef. The dive shops are fully equipped and offer certified scuba courses. A resort course is also offered enabling the novice to dive the local reefs. Belize Diving Services. Frenchie's Diving Service. Big Fish Dive Center. All underwater shots courtesy Carlos Tours. just have to see it, but don't have time for a dive, you can charter a plane and see the Blue Hole from the air as in my photo above.
