This is the busy capital of Barbados and combines
offices,
banks and international standard
shops. The town is bisected by the careenage, an inlet from the sea which has pleasure craft and fishing boats moored along its sides.
Cafe's are
bars overlooking the waterfront on the southern side and make ideal venue for a meal or a
drink and watching the boats. The main thoroughfare, Broad Street is always busy and is lined with
shops selling a wide selection of local and international goods, many at duty free prices. The main branches of most
banks are here too, together with
bars and cafes for that thirst quenching
drink. Bridgetown has many fine buildings from the Parliament buildings and St. Michaels' Cathedral to the more modern Financial
Centre all close to Trafalgar Square and the first statue of Nelson. There are many great houses dotted around the island, they were the houses of the early planters and in many cases have been preserved and are open to the public. Visit Sunbury House in St. Phillip which boasts a large collection carriages, old fashion implements and an interesting look at life as it was. In the north, visit St. Nicholas Abbey, one of the oldest houses in the Western Hemisphere. Nearby is Morgan Lewis mill, a well preserved wind powered sugar mill. Visit Codrington College, an early 18th century building that houses a theological college reached through an avenue of cabbage palms and past a large lily pond. © 2004 High Holdings. golf courses including the world famous Sandy Lane and the newly opened southern
golf course where you can play and hire clubs as well.
Tennis courts are available, many with floodlights so you can play in the cool evening air. If you prefer to watch, cricket matches are played every weekend during the season at numerous grounds island wide and you would be welcomed along to enjoy the
game. There's a lot to do in the evening as well, with a large selection of
restaurants and
bars, some with live music. Here you can enjoy a meal either in a
quiet relaxing way or get into the
party mood as you eat. You can visit one of the many night clubs too and dance the night away to the sounds of the Caribbean. But if all this sounds too stressful, you can relax by the
pool or on a white sandy beach and bask in the sun, swim in the turquoise blue sea and enjoy an ice cool
drink at a beachside

Barbados has some breathtaking views and wandering scenery best seen by wondering through the islands lanes and roads. In the northeast, the Scotland district has marvelous vistas of hills and tropical scenery often set against a distant vista of the Atlantic surf breaking on the shore. The seascapes of the east coast are wonderful with the massive rollers putting up a fine salt spray mist which give a sepia effect to the shoreline, cliffs and surrounding hills. There are marvelous views over the island from many vantage points. Cherry Tree Hill near Nicholas Abbey looks right down the East Coast. Hackleton Cliff high above Bathsheba lets you see from the north to the south of the island. Gun Hill, a former British Army Signal Station now operated by the Barbados National Trust gives you a view over the South including Bridgetown and there are many more... Where man has had a hand, visit the Flower Forest and Andromeda
Gardens with their wonderful displays of tropical flowers and shrubs. Walk through Welchman Hall Gully looking out for the local green monkey or visit Harrison's Caves for an almost unique place anywhere in the world. So you can see there's lots to do and see to make your holiday memorable so that you will return, perhaps see more.
