Things to Do on And Around Bequia. Plan a day
trip to the Tobago Keys with on the Friendship Rose, an original Bequia schooner. Your hosts serve
breakfast,
lunch,
tea and endless
drinks. Mustique, the island of Princess Margaret, Mick Jagger and other rich and famous, is but an hours sail away. Ask Winnie to charter Dwight Taylor and his boat for the
trip. Dwight is charming and an excellent sailor. Swim at Macaroni Beach, take a
tour of the island, and have
lunch at Cotton house or the famous Basil’s
Bar, right on the beach. St. Vincent, an hours ferry ride away, boasts a beautiful botanical
garden, and an active volcano. Take a
taxi tour of the island or plan a day of climbing Soufriere, the volcano. You can drive part of the way, but it’s an hours hike to the top. Definitely worth the
trip… the view is magnificent. While you’re there, visit the local
shops and have
lunch at the French
restaurant. Ask Winnie to arrange to have you met at the ferry by Robert, our favorite driver. He’ll take care of you for the day and show you whatever you’d like to see. for a great day of diving or snorkeling. From Moonhole, walk to the village of Paget Farm, which is just past the
airport. Just on the other side of the village on the right you’ll find Banana Patch
studios. If you have Winnie call in advance, Sam and Donna McDowell will welcome you. Sam does wonderful scrimshaw, and Donna makes Sailor’s Valentines and similar artwork with shells. Further along on the left is Athneal Olliviere’s little whaling museum. If it is open, it’s worth the
trip to see Sam McDowell's original whaling paintings, copies of which are on sale in picture and postcard form at the Bequia Bookstore. Athneal was Bequia’s most famous harpooner, a true Bequia legend. Before you get into town, turn off at Friendship Bay for a swim and
lunch on the beach. You can also swim at Low bay, further on toward town. Have Winnie call about the condition of the beaches (smooth, wavy etc.) and the availability of
lunch at both places. If you swim at low Bay, be sure to stop at Victorine’s. There you’ll find beautiful hand
screened silk scarves and other artwork. She’s not open every day so have Winnie call first. Take a
taxi to the Old Fort for a wonderful
lunch. Go left at the old Barclays’
Bank building and up the stairs to Local Color. Visit Melinda’s for hand
screened T-shirts and other clothing. Noah’s Arcade has wonderful local crafts. You can have a great
lunch overlooking the harbor at Gingerbread House, owned by Pat Mitchell, the former wife of Son Mitchell, the Prime Minister. Be sure to buy a copy of her book, Bequia Sweet. It has the best pictures of Bequia you’ll find, and is a great reminder of your holiday. You can also have
lunch at Mac’s Pizzeria, also overlooking the harbor. The Frangipani Hotel is a wonderful spot right on the beach. Visit it for
lunch,
dinner and the “jump up”. Have Winnie call to find out which night. For a special
lunch or
dinner, try the Plantation House on the harbor. You can also swim there and have
lunch by the beach. Take a
taxi to the Turtle Farm, where sea turtles are raised and nurtured before being released. Definitely worth the
trip. Spring Plantation puts on a great curry
lunch on Sundays, often with a band. You’ll find all of Bequia there. If you are shopping for food in Port Elizabeth, use Doris’ Fine Foods. She has the best selection at reasonable prices. The Rastafarians have an open-air market across the street. You can buy fruits and vegetables from them as well, but negotiate your price and make sure the quality is good. Doris is a
safer bet. Read unbiased opinions about. Travel, accommodation and real estate in the Brisbane Surrounds area. See our listing on. For more great vacation rentals all over the world - See. Vacation Rentals by Owner. © Copyright 2006 Moonhole.com All rights reserved.
More Information about Moonrise and Moonhole. Thank you for inquiring about Moonrise. I’d like to tell you a little about the Moonhole community and Bequia Island. Originally a handful of private houses built for friends of Tom and Gladdie Johnston, the founders and architects of Moonhole, it now comprises about fourteen homes. After the death of Gladdie Johnston, we formed a Homeowner’s Association to help maintain the houses and the natural
beauty of our unique location. A few of us rent our homes as we still working and can’t spend the whole winter on Bequia (much as we would like to!). Bequia is not developed like some other Caribbean destinations. There are no
golf courses,
casinos or cinemas. Rather, Bequia has unspoiled charm,
beauty and friendliness. Its people are independent and proud of their sea-faring history. It is one of the last few islands where whaling is permitted, limited to two whales a year caught by harpoons hand thrown by men in sailboats. Bequia has excellent
restaurants, interesting
shops, several beautiful beaches for swimming,
tennis courts, diving, snorkeling and sailing. The island has resisted large-scale tourism and the number of cruise ships visiting the harbor is limited both by number and be size. Tourists are accommodated in small hotels,
apartments and rental homes. Bequia is a Mecca for sailors, and the yachting crowd anchors in the spacious harbor. Moonhole is a twenty minute
taxi ride from the ferry terminal in the harbor, and a five-minute ride from the
airport. A private community encompassing one end of the island, it is very secluded, with houses built into a rocky steep ridge, open to the elements and to spectacular views. The absence of electricity creates a romantic and tranquil atmosphere. Kerosene and gas lights are set out at night by the staff. Propane gas powers the
refrigerators, stoves and
irons. Moonrise is about 160 feet above sea level, high enough to catch the trade winds, keeping the temperature pleasant and refreshing even during the summer months and minimizing the presence of insects. Visitors arrive at the Moonhole gates by
taxi, and from there reach the house via a network of stone paths that connect the community. Porters and maids carry up baggage and all supplies for the house. Moonrise comes with my housekeeper/cook included for 2 people and with an extra junior girl if there are 4 or 6. Ideally the house sleeps 4 people. There are
two bedrooms, each with private
bath. I can, if need be, accommodate two in a third
bedroom but the downstairs
bathroom would be shared. The house, including the housekeeper/cook rents for different amounts per week depending on the number of people. Food and beverages are your responsibility. They can be purchased for you at the Homeowners Association store, and you will be billed prior to your departure, or you can purchase your own provisions in the harbor. We usually purchase the ingredients for your arrival
dinner and first
breakfast for you at the store, so as to have food and beverages on hand, and after that you can discuss your needs with my housekeeper who will be happy to help. If you wish, you can rent a car in the harbor and park it at the Moonhole gates or you can uses
taxis or the dollar
taxi available from Paget Farm, a ten-minute walk from the gates. Our driver will pick you up at the
airport or the ferry terminal upon your arrival and deliver you to Moonhole for a small fee. There are lots of things to do on Bequia, historical sites and artists’
studios to visit as well as the various activities already mentioned. There are also several fun day
trips – a snorkeling
trip aboard a real Bequia built schooner, the Friendship Rose, or a day charter to Mustique, home of Mick Jagger, Princess Margaret and the famous Basil’s
Bar. Some people just prefer to spend their days basking in the sun on Moonrise’s deck, watching the yachts sail by, relaxing with a good book—all without interruption by the
phone or
television. No matter what your preferences, the Moonhole experience is unlike any resort in the Caribbean. The houses and their
gardens harmonize with the beautiful terrain and flora of the setting. The views of the sea and other Grenadine islands are breathtaking. It’s a vacation in paradise!
