When I return what can you do about the weather - you both came through in every other department...Marlene from Etobicoke, Ontario arl Trickey and Jim Crooks are your hosts at Mahogany Manor. Carl and Jim recently took over the tradition of this Bed and
Breakfast from former owners, Wayne Harrison and Ross Leavitt. Wayne and Ross are both long time residents of Saint John and are interested in the architecture and history of the city. Wayne and Ross have authored and published two books: The
Kitchens of Saint John cookbook was published as a fund raising project for the Imperial Theatre project. The cookbook contains over 1000 favourite recipes of local citizens and the artwork from 21 local artists. It sold over 9,500 copies in three printings and raised over $28,000 for the project. There are no copies of the book for sale but your hosts can show you their copy if you are interested. The Imperial theatre originally opened in 1913 and hosted a variety of talent before becoming a
movie theatre and then a church. It was purchased by the people of Saint John, through fund raising, in 1983 to be restored to the wonderful theatre it is today. It is located on the north side of King's Square and has
tours during the summer afternoons. It is well worth a visit - just stop in and ask to have a
tour. A Heritage Now - Saint John is a
coffee table book with sketches by Ray Butler, a well-known local artist, of 37 sites and buildings in Saint John. Each of the sketches is accompanied by a brief narrative explaining the history or significance of each. Copies of this book are for sale for $15.00 here at Mahogany Manor. Just ask your hosts. Wayne is a collector of Christmas ornaments, with enough to fill three trees! Ask him to show you his collection. Or better yet, bring along one to leave behind after your stay. Wayne is a proud Saint John resident and offers the following thought: Many visitors to our city suffer some confusion in the pronunciation and/or spelling of our city's name. We've included this little verse to help you in remembering Saint John is NOT St. John, St. John's or Saint John's.. SAINT JOHN It's really very simple, Saint John is spelled out so. It's wrongly spelled quite often So we thought you'd like to know. It's blasphemy to contract the Saint so spell Saint John completely, and don't you dare add apostrophe 's' to put it quite succinctly. We're proud of our fine city for it's Saint John not St. John. And we feel it's such a pity to be referred to as St. John's. For the latter is in Newfoundland a city as proud as we. We both have very fine people but separate identities. So, when you speak or write the name though this verse be gone, nothing else is quite the same; for there's only one Saint John. or call (506) 636-8000 or tollfree 1-800-796-7755.
