KESWICK UPON DERWENTWATER is a Lakeland market town which derives from Old English for 'cheese farm', is pronounced Kezzick. (Keso is the Latin derivative for cheese and wick is Old English for farm). At its heart is Market Square and the famous Moot Hall, with its famous one-handed clock. The history of the Moot Hall is sketchy, but there are reports of a significant building on the site as early as 1571. The current building was erected in 1813, and since then has served as a courthouse, a prison, a museum, a town hall and even a butter and fruit market! The famous one-handed clock can be seen above the west end of the hall. The building is now home to Keswick’s Tourist Information Centre. The countryside around Keswick has provided for the town in a number of ways since days gone by. The hills around Keswick were mined for lead, copper and silver as far back as the 16th Century, when Keswick was a thriving mining community. Then, German miners made up a significant part of the skilled workforce of the town, using their skills and expertise to prospect and dig new mines, e.g. the Wad mine at Seathwaite, Silver Gill mine at Roughton Gill. Indeed their legacy still remains – the names Hindmarch, Stanger, Pepper and many more are still common in the area. The remains of many charcoal pits in Borrowdale woods bear testimony to a prosperous charcoal industry. Peat from the fells fuelled many furnaces in the area and beyond. In fact part of the town used to be a large ash tip. But it is for its graphite that Keswick is most famous. Indeed, Keswick was once the ‘pencil’ capital of the world. Stories still abound of the lengths the graphite industry went to, to protect its graphite from being smuggled out. Indeed, some of the walking trails to the southwest and west of Keswick were once smuggling routes for graphite, out of Keswick to the sea. In modern times Keswick has emerged as a thriving, vibrant and popular community. It boasts a number of fine restaurants, public houses and shops, most centred around Market Square and Main Street. It has an excellent reputation for outdoor equipment and clothing, from its plethora of outdoor shops and outlets. Many an expedition to far off exotic mountains has had equipment sourced from Keswick shops. Keswick cinema shows the latest films and plays host to the Keswick Film Club. There are a number of museums in the town – the pencil factory, the Keswick museum at Fitz park, Cars of the Stars motor museum and many more. The numerous and award winning town parks have a variety of facilities including tennis courts, bowls a miniature golf course and beautiful gardens. To many, Keswick is the heart of northern Lakeland.
