Inverness's top attractions such as the castle, cathedral and river are all within easy walking distance of Glenuig House. The city has a great selection of shops, restaurants and live music venues, as well as excellent bars and nightclubs for evening entertainment. Regular events take place throughout the year including festivals, markets, etc. The area has castles galore whether you enjoy ancient ruins or elegant interiors. Urquhart Castle (open all year) on Loch Ness is very popular. Cawdor Castle and gardens (pictured here) are also worth a visit (May - October only). Brodie Castle has a spectacular show of daffodils in the Spring. Moniack Castle has been turned into a winerie which you can visit for a spot of tasting! Take a ride up the coast to Golspie and you can visit fairytale Dunrobin Castle and gardens (home of Clan Sutherland). Fort George now includes the Regimental Museum of the Queen's Own Highlanders and is also a working Army garrison. There and also at Culloden Battlefield, you can learn the history of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion. You are spoiled for choice with the wide range of activities on offer in the Highlands. Be sure to take a boat trip to see the local dolphins (cruises operate from Inverness and nearby Cromarty on the Black Isle). There are plenty of opportunities for walking to suit all abilities. You can try a section of the Great Glen Way (the long distance trail between Fort William and Inverness) or climb a Munro (such as Ben Wyvis which towers over Inverness). There are many easy walks in Inverness itself including forest trails and along the canal path. Golf is very popular - with three courses in Inverness and plenty more in the surrounding area. Inverness has a swimming pool and ice rink. Glenuig House is only 10 minutes walk from the railway and bus station. Inverness Airport is 6 miles out of the city centre (approximately 15 minutes by car, taxi or bus). As the Capital of the Highlands, Inverness is ideally situated for accessing the West, East and North of Scotland tourist routes. If you are travelling without a car, there are plenty of day trips you can take by bus or train. You can stay for a week and explore the Highlands in different directions each day from Skye to Orkney!
