Sliema and St. Julian's are located on the peninsula to the north of Valletta from which it is separated by Marsamxett harbour. Sliema was once the preserve of the Maltese upper classes and a Sliema address is still something of a status symbol in Maltese society. It is a centre for shopping, restaurants and cafe life. The seafront used to be lined with pretty terraced houses each with a typical wooden balcony and shuttered windows all painted in various bright colours. Unfortunately most of these have been replaced by high rising apartment complexes and hotels but one can still find these lovely typical houses on the back streets of Sliema. Sliema, which means 'peace, comfort', was once a quiet fishing town. Sliema and the coastline up to neighbouring St. Julian's constitutes Malta's main coastal resort. At the point known as Ferries, one finds a bus terminus with busses going to Valletta, St. Paul's bay and Bugibba, Cirkewwa, Mdina and some sandy beaches. There is also a ferry that crosses over to Valletta at frequent intervals.
