In 2007 the town of Sibiu (known in German as Hermannstadt) was named European Capital of Culture. For the year 2007 Sibius cultural institutions have decided upon promoting an attractive program, under the name of Sibiu- European Capital of Culture. From a multitude of projects the institutions have chosen the most interesting ones and in March 2006 the provisional version of the cultural program 2007 was launched. This fascinating program is based mainly on foreign culture and languages, theatre, literature, painting, dance, film, architecture, art and photography. The program includes a variety of culinary specialties, Transylvanian (Siebenburgen) breathtaking sights, traditions and customs. The program also promotes the hospitability of Sibius inhabitants towards tourists coming from all over Europe. Sibiu/ Hermannstadt is the heart of a legendary region, rich in tourist attractions. Luxemburg House was built on the first precincts of fortification of Villa Hermani, later known as Sibiu. During restoration Gothic as well as Renaissance elements were discovered while the Baroque facade dated from the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century the building belonged to Johann Georg Schaser, an Evangelical priest. Between 1999-2003, the building was restored by the Fabini Architecture Bureau and by the Kirschbaum construction company and set up as a cultural center. The restoration was financed by the Ministry of Culture, as well as by the Bureau for National Monuments of the Great Duchy of Luxembourg. The inauguration took place on the 30th of March 2004, in the presence of their Royal Majesties, the Duke Henri and Duchess Maria Tereza of Luxembourg.
