Winds On the Adriatic Sea, the bora, sirocco and north-western wind blow most often. Bura (Bora) is a dry, cold downward wind blowing in bursts from the north-northeast to the east-northeast direction. The direction in which the wind blows is primarily influenced by the configuration of the shore. The bora blows mostly in the winter, during January - March. In the summer, it usually lasts for a day or several hours. Maestral (The landward breeze) is a daily, thermic wind blowing from the northwest. It is present from the spring to the autumn, and, during the day, it often changes direction. Burin (The stiff breeze) is a wind blowing contrary to the landward breeze. It blows during the night from the north. It is strongest before dawn, and it stops soon after. Jugo (The sirocco) is a warm and moist wind which blows from the direction east-southeast to south-southwest. Its causes are high waves and rain. In the summer, it usually blows for up to 3 days, or less. The signs of the oncoming sirocco are a calm sea, weak changeable winds, haziness of the horizon, an increase in the temperature and moisture, and the gradual decrease of pressure. Waves from the southeast become larger. Climate Summer temperatures in July will be about 34C. In the winter, the coldest temperatures are noticed in the northern Adriatic (up to -16C). Sea Temperature The Adriatic sea has a very marked annual change of the surface temperature. The average annual temperature is 11°C. During the winter, the sea is the coldest and the surface temperature is about 7°C; very seldom, it can drop below that too. In the spring, the sea becomes warmer, and the surface temperature rises to 18°C. In summer the surface of the sea reaches a very high temperature, of up to 22 to 25°C. Waves in the Adriatic Heights of waves in the Adriatic are between 0.5 and 1.5 meters, and they very rarely exceed 5 meters.
Lcated alongside the flooded mouth of the Krka River, is the most pitoresque city on the eastern Adriatic coast. It was first mentioned in 1066., during the reign of the Croatian King Kresimir IV, when the city began to spread like an amphitheater below the cliff dominated by the fortress of St. Michael. The complex of streets and arched passages leading toward the harbour evolved from this, enclosing the nucleus of the city with the town hall, the princely palace, and the famous Cathedral of St. James. In addition to St. Michael, another two nearby fortresses bear witness to the turbulent past of the town. The National park Krka is a natural phenomenon of the Dalmatian karst region. In its course towards the sea, the Krka River created seven noisy, picturesque waterfalls, the best known being Roski Slap, and Skradinski Buk, the tallest travertine barriers in Europe.
