Aberdeen, often called The Granite City or The Silver City, is Scotland's third largest city, with a population of approximately 202,370. Aberdeen is the chief commercial centre and seaport in the north-east of Scotland. The city is often referred to as the Oil Capital of Europe thanks to becoming a major service base for the extraction of crude oil in the North Sea in the 1970s. The city forms the Aberdeen City unitary council area, and it is surrounded by the Aberdeenshire council area. It mostly stands between the mouths of the rivers Don and Dee. The city is blessed with amenities which cover a wide range of cultural activities and boasts a selection of museums. The city is regularly visited by Scotland's National Arts Companies. The Aberdeen Art Gallery houses a collection of Impressionist, Victorian, Scottish and 20th Century British paintings as well as collections of silver and glass. It also includes The Alexander Macdonald Bequest, a collection of late 19th century works donated by the museum's first benefactor and a constantly changing collection of contemporary work and regular visiting exhibitions. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum, located in Shiprow, tells the story of Aberdeen's links with the sea from the days of sail and clipper ships to the latest oil and gas exploration technology. The museum includes a range of interactive exhibits and models, including an 8.5m (28 feet) high model of the Murchison oil production platform and a 19th century assembly taken from Rattray Head lighthouse. Aberdeen Football Club Aberdeen Football Club is a football team from Scotland, who compete in the Scottish Premier League. Formed in 1903 from the amalgamation of a number of clubs from Aberdeen, they have been one of the top clubs in Scotland. Sir Alex Ferguson was a highly successful manager of the team in the 1980s, guiding them to three league championships, and famously to victory in the 1983 Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Real Madrid in the final. Aberdeen are the only Scottish team to have won more than one European trophy. They play at Pittodrie, which has a capacity of 22,199 and was the first all-seater and all-covered stadium in the UK. Aberdeen Centre The Granite City Aberdeen, which lies between the Rivers Don and Dee, received a Royal Charter in the 12th century and was a thriving port by the 13th century. The original pink granite houses and cobbled streets stand alongside the new Aberdeen which began in 1805 with the building of Union Street when many neo-classical buildings were built using the local grey granite from which the city gets its nickname.
