The serpent-god M'Boy, son of Tupa, the supreme god, governed the world and was the protector of the kaigang indians. In order to obtain M'Boy's good graces, each year the indians offered him their most beautiful female virgin. Maipi had been chosen to consecrate and cultivate his devotional services, and to dedicate her entire life to him. But the love between Naipi and the warrior Taroba was stronger than the kaingang honor or fear of M'Boy. On consecration day, Naipi and Taroba fled in a canoe down the Iguassu River. Furious, the serpent-god raised his enormous body and dove violently back into the river, opening a large crevice where the waters formed the Iguassu Falls. Naipi was turned into a rock and Taroba into a palm tree on the edge of the newly formed abyss. Until this day it is possible to find Taroba contemplating his beloved Naipi, without ever being able to touch her. M'Boy observes them both attentively, hidden by the water and foam of the Devil's Throat Fall.
