The residential center rises above a gentle slope that leans out towards the sea, between the promontory of Punta Sardegna to the west and Capo d;Orso to the east. Its is the port of departure for La Maddalena. In the 18th century the coastline took on an important defensive role; Palau, like La Maddalena and Caprera, became one of the many;sentinels; deployed for the protection of the Strait of Bonifacio. Numerous fortifications were erected in strategic points, of which those of Altura and Capo d;Orso are among the most beautiful and imposing. The Commercial Port consists of a north-facing dock that hosts ferry liners. The Marina is sheltered to the south by a wharf that stretches from the beginning of the commercial dock. Mooring is possible on both sides of floating docks and water and electricity are available. Refueling can be done in Darsena where there is also a 20 t crane. Anchors, telephone, toilet facilities and parking also available. In the immediate vicinity you can find supplies and services of any kind. Around the residential center you can find some excellent viewpoints that look out over an ample panoramic coastline. The view from Capo D;Orso is dominated by the eastern slope that embraces Santo Stefano, Caprera, Capo Ferro, Baia Sardinia and Arzachena;s Golfo delle Saline (;Saltworks Gulf;). From Barrage the entire territory of Palau can be seen, both towards the sea and inland. From Monte Altura the view covers all the Archipelago and the western slope towards Punta Falcone, near Santa Teresa Gallura.

From the hotel in Palau reaching Capo d;Orso on the Costa Smeralda is very simple. Find a parking space when the road curves right to descend towards Cala Capra. Then proceed on foot down the road on the left until after about 200m you reach the entrance to the military zone used by the fort. On the left a path passes through the greenery and in short time leads to the steps that climb the hill. The hill, that supports the massive body of the Bear, is 122m tall. It;s a granite ridge that juts out over the sea almost to the point of wedging itself between Santo Stefano and Caprera. The slope facing Palau is more harsh and steep. Looking at the hill from the road that connects it with the town large conchs and spurs of rock that split the profile of the ridge can be seen to the left of the Bear. The stone animal is planted firmly on high, providing immobile and sturdy witness to his endless resistance to all aggression. He more than the nearby military fortifications seems to be the guardian of the splendid places of the Costa Smeralda. Around Palau you can visit two rather important megalithic monuments: the Li Mizzani Giants; Tomb and the Nuraghe Lunchia. Both can be found at Monti Canu, a granite ridge that divides the territory of Palau from that of Arzachena. The tomb is from the Bronze Age and dates to 1500; 1200 BCE. Until 1918 it still contained its original covering: graverobbers and local landowners opened it and took both the objects inside and the granite itself. It is well-preserved just the same.

Sardinia is not just sea and beaches; to liven up our stay the hotel organizes unforgettable outings to discover this island paradise in addition to these fun activities: Accompanied by SARDINIAN HORSEMAN on the splendid beaches of Capo D;Orso or through the beautiful sand dunes of Porto Pollo. Taking horses for a swim. EXCURSIONS IN SARDINIA: La Maddalena and Caprera. Islands of Tavolara and Molara. Barbagia: Nuoro and Orgosolo. The Logudoro through the mesmerizing plateau of Budduso. MOUNTAIN BIKE TOURS: In the Maddalena Archipelago;s wildlife preserve. In the Lavezzi wildlife preserve (Corsica). Diving Classes ( by Open-Water Diving-Masters ). OUTINGS IN THE MADDALENA ARCHIPELAGO: With the splendid motorsailor SIMONA. VSAILING (Classes and rentals):

Hotel Palau;s restaurant offers a refined cuisine; our menu offers delicious and authentic Mediterranean flavors and traditional Sardinian cooking.

The Archipelago is made up of twenty-three islands and islets and is protected by strict preservation regulations that make it one of the only natural habitats still intact in the Mediterranean. Recently established is the new Parco Marino. Its emerald waters, beaches rendered pink by coral fragments, granite rock formations and its thick, aromatic juniper and myrtle forests make it one of a kind. The best way to visit the Archipelago is, naturally, by sea, navigating from island to island, hopping from one shelter to the next, anchoring in one of the numerous coves to take a swim. Even though the short distance between the various islands may relax your worries, it;s always a good idea to take a look at the meteorological conditions before setting off. An excursion from the hotel to the smaller islands (that is, excluding La Maddalena and Caprera) can be done in one day, or with the right boat, over the course of several days. LA MADDALENA: The largest island of the Archipelago (20 square km). We recommend visiting for the beautiful coastline panoramas that open up before the visitors eyes. The low side, on the right, presents a series of granite masses that shelter Cala Spalmatore. CAPRERA:Being the second largest after La Maddalena, it has a surface area of 15.75 square km. Caprera;s appeal lies not only in its natural beauty, but also in the presence of Garibaldi, whose house is one of the most visited museums in Italy. SANTO STEFANO: Found half-way between La Maddalena and Palau, it is the fourth largest island of the Archipelago. Its surface area is about 3 square km. The eastern side is occupied by a U.S. military base. SPARGI: The third largest island of the Archipelago with a surface area of 4.2 square km. BUDELLI: recognizable for a white beacon; past an inlet one arrives at Cala di Roto, known as the Pink Beach. SANTA MARIA: This island, with 2 square km of surface area, has an appearance different from that of the adjacent islands. More level and fertile, it is the only one to have been cultivated and also has a swamp that provides a resting point for migrating birds headed to Sardinia;s interior. RAZZOLI: the north point of the island is mounted by a lighthouse over Cala Rosario. This high, rocky coast is rather different from those of the other islands.

Leaving Palau for Arzachena, after about 1 km you;ll see the turn-off for Porto Rafael and Punta Sardegna. On the right the beach of Mezzo Schifo or Rada di Agincourt can be seen, where Nelson;s ships kept the French fleet in check for a long time. The hotel is by PORTO RAFAEL. The establishment is preceded by the appearance of the small church of Santa Rita to the left, where a path leads down through trees and bushes to a small piazza over the beach. The semi-circle constructions reflect the character of their creator, a Spaniard who was the first to settle the place. A granite ridge runs along the promontory, ending Punta Sardegna, where a granite mass overhangs the sea opposite the island of Spargi. On the summit a small viewpoint tower gives a full view of the northeastern extremity of Sardinia.

Just a short walk separates it from the Port and Marina, one of the most beautiful of Sardinia. The Hotel is located on the upper part of Palau, one of Sardinia;s famous tourist destinations, looking out over an extraordinary panorama of the Maddalena, Caprera and the other islands of the archipelago, as well as Corsica and part of Costa Smeralda (;Sardinia;s;Emerald Coast;;). The Hotel is located about 600m from the beach and offers a free shuttle from the hotel to the beach.
