Some excerpts from the website of The Abbey Inn that might be useful
Welcome To The Abbey Inn. A very warm welcome awaits all visitors to The Abbey Inn, from the owners Darral Joanne Sargeant. Owned by Joannes parents since 1989, Darral and Joanne bought the
business after Martin and Lesley OHagans retirement in 2001. The Abbey Inn continues to be a thriving
business, serving the Leek and surrounding areas with excellent food, real ales plus a well stocked
bar, and a fantastic place to enjoy them. Situated on the outskirts of Leek, The Abbey Inn is a delightfully 18th century Inn, with comfortable accommodation, a large car park and childrens adventure playground. The building was rebuilt in 1702 to celebrate the marriage of John and Mary Allen. The impressive sandstone building stands above Abbey Green Hamlet, which once served the Dieulacres Abbey. Ranulph, sixth Earl of Chester in 1214, founded Dieulacres Abbey. The Abbot ruled the town of Leek, his power was absolute, erecting gallows in Market Street, which he was legally authorized to hang anyone he pleased. The only stipulation of this law was he had to give 48 hours notice to the person concerned. Dieulacres Abbey shared its fate with many other monasteries under Henry VIIIs act of dissolution (around 1534). The people of Leek could once more hold up their heads and speak the thoughts that were in them. We have
