latitude 41 degrees 21' 30 north, longitude 71 degrees 58' 00 west... a landfall much appreciated by captains and crews in Mystic's great days of the last century. This period found hundreds of sloops, brigs and steamers built here. Among them were such notable ships as the ill-fated whaling sloop Shaw Perkins, built in 1840; the famous clipper David Crockett, launched October 18, 1853, and the U.S. Navy's first
iron-clad gunboat, U.S.S. Galeana, which first slid into the Mystic River February 14, 1862. Looking south out the windows, your view encompasses two states. Directly ahead lies Mason's Island, once given by the King to Major John Mason. On the horizon, across Long Island Sound, is Fisher's Island, NY, described by Cleveland Amory as the last resort of the very rich. And, when the day is extremely clear, you may see the dim blue outline of Long Island and Montauk, hovering far south. Many are the legendary and historical sites within hail of our doors. Just below and to the right is the historic Denison Burying Ground, where lie heroes who fell in the Revolutionary War. The great American marine restoration, Mystic Seaport, is just one mile north on Route 27. Our new exhibition
kitchen is now open. Featuring a wood fired oven,
