Before the foundation of the first mission towns in the californian peninsula, as a consequence of the official permission given by the superior authority of New Spain to the jesuit missionaries Eusebio Francisco Kino and Juan Maria de Salvatierra, several expeditions with colonization purposes had already been realized since the conqueror Hernan Cortes came to this land in 1535. Most of these were organized in order to find presumed gold and silver deposits and pearls beds along the gulf coastline, though they failed because the settlers were not able to overcome the dryness of the soil, wich impeded an efficient development of agriculture activities. Also the eventual hostility of local indian tribes, not always friendly as a result of some violent events occured in the past, blocked the way to the spaniards for about 170 years, as we said, until the jesuit order established the mother of all californian towns in 1697, the Mission of Our Lady of Loreto. The above mentioned license of the king of Spain allowed the jesuit missionaries, at the expense of their own institution funds and donors, to be in charge of the religious and social education process of native people and run with the political and justice administration over the indians and the few hired soldiers that helped them since th beggining. After the establishment of Loreto, 16 more jesuit mission towns were born in peninsular California between 1697 and 1767, a little before the members of the were exiled from all spanish territories. These were, in chronological order, the missions named San Javier, Mulege, San Juan Bautista, San Jose Comondu, La Purisima Concepcion, Guadalupe, La Paz, Los Dolores, Santiago, San Ignacio, San Jose del Cabo, Todos Santos, San Luis Gonzaga, Santa Gertrudis, San Francisco de Borja and Santa Maria de los Angeles. When the jesuits were forced to leave the peninsula, the spanish monarchy asked the franciscan friars of Mexico City and Guadalajara to take and continue with the missional administration, wich they did for 5 years, until they left for conquest in 1773. Franciscans built only one mission town in Baja California: San Fernando de Velicata, not too far from actual village of Rosario. Their substitutes were the dominican monks, whose labour gave 9 more mission establishments to the peninsular California: El Rosario, Santo Domingo, San Vicente, San Miguel, Santo Tomas, San Pedro Martir, Santa Catarina. El Descanso and Guadalupe. Dominican administration weakened littel by little during a long process that ended in 1854, with the secularization of the last mission town, Todos Santos.
