Where to go and what to see. From Spring to Autumn, Berkeley castle is open to visitors, you may wander through the castle at leisure or enjoy the free facility of a one hour guided tour. Before or after a visit to the castle there are the delights of the Butterfly Farm, set in a walled garden. The Jenner Museum..(. The Jenner Museum adjacent to The Old Schoolhouse, is devoted to the life and works of Dr Edward Jenner the Father of Immunology. Born in 1749, this son of a vicar not only discovered the cure for Smallpox, but also became an expert on heart disease and hypothermia, as well as studying the natural history of the hedgehog and the cuckoo!. Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust..(. Four miles from Berkeley is Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust, probably the world's biggest sanctuary for rare waterfowl. A short drive to the East is the Westonbirt Arboretum where a vast collection of trees and shrubs grow in staggering profusion. Cotswold Towns Villages. The spa towns of Bath and Cheltenham are within easy driving distance of Berkeley, and across either of the Severn bridges, on the western bank of the Severn you can visit the old market town of Chepstow, the ruins of Tintern Abbey, the Forest of Dean and the beautiful Wye Valley with its traces of Offa's Dyke, built in the 8th century to contain the Welsh. Beautiful Cotswold towns and villages abound within easy driving distance. You really should visit places such as Painswick, Stow-in-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-water, Moreton in Marsh, Wotton under Edge, Nailsworth and Cirencester. There can be few better places to spend an afternoon, or better still, a day, than at Stinchcombe Hill. Especially with a golf club in your hand. Gently undulating fairways add an additional interest to almost every shot you play. Whatever the weather, the course challenges the lower as well as the higher handicap player despite a scratch par 68.

The Vale of Berkeley stretches some 25 miles along the Severn Estuary and is bounded on the Eastern side by the Cotswold Hills. Berkeley lies in the centre of the Vale dominated by the magnificent 12th century Berkeley Castle. This fortress, still inhabited by the Berkeley family, has played a pivotal role in English history. It was in a dungeon in the castles keep that King Edward II was brutally murdered in 1327. Berkeley Castle is mentioned in Shakespeare. Berkeley has a famous place in medical history as the place where Dr Edward Jenner discovered the vaccination for smallpox. Visit the beautiful Georgian rectory where he lived, which is now a museum to his life and work. About the Old School House Hotel. The Old School House Hotel is located in the town of Berkeley in the English county of Gloucestershire. Berkeley is easily accessible from all directions, situated as it is close to the junction of the M4 and M5 motorways. It is less than an hours drive from Birmingham and under two hours drive from London Heathrow airport. Take the M5 Motorway and exit at Junction 14 if travelling from the South, or Junction 13 if coming from the North. At this Junction follow signs for Stroud/Berkeley (A38). At the A38, take the road to Stroud/Berkeley and head for Berkeley. Follow the brown tourist signs for Berkeley Castle - we are right next door to it!!. The whole journey from leaving the M5 should take no more than 10/15 minutes. Alternatively, take the A38 North out of Bristol or South from Gloucester until you see the signs for Berkeley Castle. Turn into Berkeley and you will be with us in a few minutes.
