Having been a hotel since 1896. The Commodore has been and still is an important part of the town. During its history the Commodore Hotel has had the pleasure of accommodation many well known Personalities, including Royalty; the King of Jordan was one of them and one of the hotels bathrooms was especially designed for him. The hotel has featured on many postcards issued over the years. Here we show you some. The Commodore circa 1940, it was used as an officers training camp during the war. The hotel was originally build by a doctor Greenway on the site of the first Rectory in the town and was named Plas Winton after Archdeacon Henry de Winton who lived in the Rectory. After the war the hotel was renamed Hotel Commodore. Another of the many Postcards produced over the years, this one shows the hotel circa 1960. The first Bar to be opened in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II was the Log Cabin Bar at the Hotel Commodore. Here is the commemorative postcard issued at the opening. Text on the card: The showplace of Wales. Where all the right people congregate to enjoy the hospitable atmosphere of Llandrindod Wells.. Click on the picture to enlarge. The Bar has been much updated over the years however the atmosphere still exists. The growth and past success of Llandrindod Wells was largely thanks to the discovery of the Spa waters. Here is a cartoon showing the towns people's ever present sense of humor. Shon a Shan at the chalybeate spring Postcard circa 1900. One of the many cartoons about Llandrindods' Spa waters.
