St Bees, although a small village, has a number of features worthy of visit. Apart from a number of local walks, not to mention the start of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk, there is a splendid 11th century Priory, one of the finest buildings in Cumbria. It was here that the St Bees Man was found in 1981. For more information about the village see the. St Bees is an ideal touring base for the quieter and beautiful western Lakes and Fells. By car, Wasdale, Ennerdale and Bassenthwaite can be reached within 30-40 minutes. Keswick is just a few minutes beyond Bassenthwaite, and the heart of the Lake District can be reached in just over an hour. It is also within easy reach, even by train, of the Georgian town and restored harbour of Whitehaven, as well as the L'al Ratty miniature railway which goes from Ravenglass to Wasdale.
