From then on, he was sometimes on land but oftener at sea. He married and his wife bore him a son and a daughter in Falmouth. As success came to him he took his wife with him on his voyages lasting 4-5 years. This was a custom of shipmasters from Cape Cod. His daughter Amelia was born in Fayal in the Azores and her sister Mary was born on Pitcairn Island among the survivors of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. Amelia was five years old when she got home to Falmouth, but she lived here into her late nineties. Capt. Lawrence sailed as master of the whalers Addison from 1848-1852, and the Anaconda, 1852-1856. He made a final voyage on the brig Alto, 1857-1862. After this, he retired and stayed ashore as a local
businessman. His whaling voyages had made him rich and enabled him to build a fine residence and take up a life of comparative leisure ashore. Today we enjoy the fruits of his industry at his fine residence, which has become the CAPT. TOM LAWRENCE HOUSE, Bed and
Breakfast Inn.. Historical notes courtesy of Dudley W. Hallett, Former President, Falmouth Historical Society
