Sports - Fishing, Scuba Diving Fed by the outflow from the great Orinoco River, Trinidad's waters are nutrient rich, drawing wahoo, kings, tuna tarpon, billfish and more and boat charters are easily arranged ranging from the more basic but seaworthy to new offshore sport-fishers with first class gear. Scuba diving instruction from beginners to advanced can also be arranged by experienced and fully qualified PADI diving instructors. Trinidad's Beaches Trinidad has a variety of lovely beaches. In the North the most popular beach is Maracas Bay. A little further down the road brings you to beautiful Las Cuevas Bay, Madamas Bay and eventually to Blanchisseuse, where the more adventurous can hike to the lovely Paria Bay. The more popular beaches have beach facilities and don't forget to taste freshly cooked shark and bake at Maracas 'with everyt'ing in it'. There are many other beaches for you to enjoy such as Mayaro and Vessigny on other coasts. Trinidad's Festivals. Trinidad Carnival takes place on 3rd and 4th March 2003 but carnival activities begin long before with steel pan and calypso competitions and each masquerade band, some of which have 3000 to 4000 participants, has its own 'band launch fete' to promote their own carnival costumes. Divali - Festival of Lights Deepavali in Sanskrit meaning row of lighted lamps,is a Hindu festival which usually from the last week of October to the first half of November. The Festival signifies the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil. Thousands of tiny clay pots called deyas each with a lighted candle wick are filled with oil and arranged in intricate patterns, usually on split bamboo branches and at each corner of the home. Hosay Usually in the first half of the year between March and June, this begins after a 40-day fast. The event commemorates the martyrdom of the Muslim brothers Hussein and Hassan, grandsons of Mohammed the prophet. The lively three-day street procession combines tassa drumming, dancing and the carrying of tadjahs, (elaborately decorated replicas of Hussein's tomb), which are eventually cast into the sea. Competitions in drumming are held between rival Hosay groups. This festival takes place in St. James, which is about ten minutes walk away from The Gingerbread House. Bird Watching, Ecotours. Because of our island's geographical connection with Venezuela, our flora and fauna are both Caribbean and South American. Over 430 species of birds can be found in these small islands as well as a wide variety of wild orchids and bromeliads. Here you can hike or
bike through lush rainforest and mountain peaks and kayak through rivers and wetlands. Eco
trips are best done with the expertise of one of our many experienced and knowledgeable eco-
tour operators. Visit Brasso Seco Paria - Ecotourism at it's Best - Valley Life. Photographs Noel Norton
