Threave Castle, the fourteenth century stronghold built by Archibald the Grim, 3rd Earl of Douglas, stands on an island in the River Dee. For a description of the 1455 seige, please go to our 'History' page. In 1640 it was besieged again, this time by the Covenanters, whilst it was being held by the Earl of Nithsdale on behalf of King Charles I. This time the castle held out for thirteen weeks against heavy artillery bombardment, but following its surrender, it was 'slighted', or made uninhabitable by removing the roof and various other parts so that it could not be held again against an army. It has remained a substantial ruin ...

Families Are Welcome We can make one of our rooms into a triple and can provide a cot on request. Children are of course always welcome and are fully catered for with our children's specials. The Coach House is one of our holiday cottages situated in the heart of Dildawn Estate. It is a beautifully restored Coach mans cottage forming part of the listed courtyard area. It has it's own large private garden with two areas for eating outdoors, relaxing, sun bathing or barbecuing. Outdoor picnic tables are provided. The garden features an open grassy areas for children and pets to play. Mixed flower beds with many wild herbs featuring regional flowers and fauna. There is a a drying area with clothes lines for drying laundry. This holiday cottage was featured on a television programme focusing on well designed houses within the area and was highlighted for it's innovative design.
