Gardens Beyond Compare. Rare shrubs, plants and trees abound in a sub-tropical valley coaxed into early blooms by the Gulf Stream. Widely acknowledged as one of Cornwalls finest 'hanging gardens' they were laid out c.1800 by Robert Were Fox; uncle to Alfred Fox creator of Glendurgan and Trebah gardens, using specimens from the earliest RHS expeditions up the Yangtze Himalayas. Our giant, first generation, Australian tree ferns were brought to Falmouth by 'Packet' ships as ballast and then thrown over the side into the bay.
