Outside the Inn (Please click on images to enlarge). The imposing three story Georgian house has graced the banks of the Sampit River for over two and a quarter centuries. Situated on a gracious bluff amid magnolias, camellias, hydrangeas, and the sheltering arms of venerable live oaks, the house is accompanied by another monument of South Carolina history – The Red Store. This c. 1740 shipping warehouse formerly stored silks, indigo and imported wines, and once fronted the largest dock in the harbor. Sailors say the distinctive red roof is visible three miles out across the bay, and that the once plentiful sailing ships aligned their wheels to that brick-colored beacon when seeking entry to the harbor.
