Steichen submitted photographs to the institute of Chicago for exhibition and were accepted by a jury that included Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz was impressed with a photograph entitled The Pool, which he later purchased and called a masterpiece. He later purchased many pieces from Steichen, paying him $50 to $100 in 1902.
